  1. There are numerous American and Japanese performance cars that last way past 12 years without having to replace an engine. My point is the parts are way overpriced. I also have an old Chevrolet Suburban with 100,000 miles, no problems and no worry about IMS bearings, cylinders, RMS, etc. Parts are cheap as well. Chevrolet was able to build a very dependable work horse engine that would last for well over 100,000 miles. I consider any car an investment because you expect to get some of your money back out of it. Today's cars (12 years old) should not be it's death, especially when the original price was $70,000 in 1999! Porsche should have addressed this particular engine with all cars not just the ones that blew up under warranty (because that shouldn't happen to a car with 30,000 miles)! I guess I was never under the impression that a used German performance car (of any make) was a good investment. You buy them because you love them.. Not because they make sense financially. Like any used german performance car a warranty is always a good idea. I had a 996 blow up on me (no warranty).. I was mad but it didn't stop me from buying another one (with a warranty.) By the way your car is 12 years old.. Just sayin...

  3. Are the clear headlights for 1999-2003 996 interchangeable with the clear headlights from the same year Boxster? Any difference? I need a clear passenger side for my 996 and I found one new and it is about $60 cheaper for the Boxster light. It looks the same but I wanted to make sure. Thanks
  4. No 16 year old needs a sports car. They lack maturity and driving skills. You need to think long and hard about this. You would live a lifetime with regret if something happened to him. I see it on the news and in the paper allot. Buy him the biggest safest car you can find!
  5. Wow! Engine gone at 60,000 miles! And we pay a fortune for these cars and a fortune for parts! Congratulations? For what? NADA retail = car $29,000 and put a $25,000 engine in it! That is robbery! Thank goodness you had a warranty. I believe Porsche is a great car, but for parts to be 5x the cost of other car makers, I don't believe it is worth it! You can get the same performance from much cheaper cars. I am giving up my Porsche dream and going to get rid if my 99 996. I am really regretting my purchase at this point. I bought a 1999 996 C2 and I have already spent about $3,000 on fixing things and I still have to put a torque converter in it? Also, I probably need to do the rear main seal and IMS bearing. Anyone want it for $18,000? I will be losing $4,000! I'm done.
  6. I didn't mean to use the tip of the screwdriver. You would wrap a thick cloth around it and secure it. It is meant to provide support and strength not to gouge and scrape!
  7. I've never cleaned one, but I have read about people using a long screwdriver with a small cloth attached and cleaning it from the inside. That way you don't have to take it apart.
  8. How do you add a powered subwoofer to the 220 stereo. Is there is an easy way to add it and also an IPOD connection. My skills are very limited when it comes to stereos so I need something pretty basic. I was thinking about a single powered subwoofer.
  9. I too bought a 1999 996 C2 because it was a Porsche that I could afford. I have to admit I was shocked at the cost of parts and the cost of an engine replacement if I ever need it. I would say the parts are double the price of most Japanese or American sports cars. I wish it wasn't that way. However, in saying this it is a Porsche and I can ride around my city and don't see any others for weeks. It's worth it to have something that everyone else doesn't have.
  10. What if I want to add just a powered subwoofer but retain all of the factory wiring and amp. Is that difficult to do?
  11. In replacing the 210 with the 220, is it just unplug one and plug the new in? No modifications?
  12. I get a white/gray smoke on startup. It lasts about 5 to 10 seconds then goes away. It does not smoke any other time. It has the typical strong exhaust smell. is this normal or sign of something bad coming? It is a 1999 996 C2 Tiptronic
  13. It is not allot of rust but there is a residue that looks like salt or chemicals. I have sprayed underneath by attaching my lawn sprinkler and letting it run, but I still have residue. Can I just scrub with Simple Green and treat the small rust areas?
  14. I have a 1999 996 which was originally a New York and Ohio car. Needless to say there is allot of salt damage and rust underneath. Does anyone know of a way to stop or slow down the rusting. Also is there a way of repainting or coating some way. Thanks.
  15. I finally got them. I didn't see the 3 inside bolts. They were also rusted really bad. I'll have to use new bolts and nuts on reinstall. I sending them to Fister for an upgrade. Thanks for the help Loren.
  16. I searched the forum and didn't quite find what I need. What is the trick to removing a 1999 996 C2 mufflers. I cannot get the inner bracket bolts out. One appears to be about 5 inches long with the angle curved towards the engine. Help!
  17. I just ordered from Suncoast. I had to get a 2000 for my 1999. It cost me about $40 with shipping. It beat the high ebay prices!
  18. I have a 99 996 and I am getting ready to send mine to Fister. You can't beat the price for what you get!
