  1. Lee, Did replacing the shift cables fix the problem. This just happened to me this weekend except I was stuck in 4th. I was able to get under the car and manually shift it into second to get home. No side to side movement and once out of gear you can't get it back into gear. Thanks in advance. 2. I have to replace the evaporator in the AC unit hidden behind the dash. Has anyone done this job, and if so is there a write up anywhere for removing the dash. I did search "dash removal" and several variations with out success. Thanks in advance. Marc 1999 996
  3. 1999 996. I had to replace the passenger's side window mechanism and in doing so I forgot to disconnect the battery BEFORE disconnecting the side air bag. Air bag light is on. I have two OBD II readers. Both show that "MIL" is on, but neither will let me clear the light. Is there something proprietary about this part of the system that requires a trip to the dealer? Tried searching "air bag" and various combinations with success. Thanks in advance for any insight on this. Marc EDIT: I guess I need to learn how to spell . . . found "airbag" . . .
  4. FWIW, I just went through this with my wife's car. Ticking from left bank for a few months, then loss of power no idle, missing. Shop found no compression in number 1 and then found bent valve with boroscope. Based on what I told them they said lifter failure, something that they had seen before. The not so funny thing is that I found new lifters and they are similar in design (not dimension) to the type that failed in my 951 track car. Lifter failure is well known to 951 owners. To make matters worse, Porsche stopped making the lifters and ING (the bearing company) filled the demand void. ING lifters are failing much sooner than their Porsche counterparts. For 951 owners that have modified engines the only fix is a solid lifter set up. Attached is a picture of the lifter that failed last year while I was on the track. The piston came out of the lifter and then seized pushing the valve into the piston. The second picture is a 996 lifter from one of the online parts warehouses. End of long winded story, if your 996 is ticking as described above, better do something about it sooner rather than later.
  5. A simple compression test was the trick in my case. 1 was at zero, 2 & 3 below spec. Opinion was lifter or spring on 1, variocam problem on 2 & 3. Good luck. I am sorry that my original response about the class action was terse. Gas man is right. A class action might get Porsche to see the light. However food for thought starting with '77 and the snapping head studs, then in the late 80's valve guides & rod bolts on the 3.2s, bad head to cylinder seal system in the 964, and bad valve guides and poor cylinder to block sealing o-rings on all 3.6s. Seems like a lot of problems for such a high end vehicle.
  6. I can tell you within a reasonable degree of certainty what the tapping is because I had the same thing coming from the left bank. Then a couple of months ago the car started missing and would not hold an idle. I finally gave up trying the find the problem and took in to a trusted shop and they found ZERO compression in #3, stuck the boroscope in and found a bent valve. He said that he has seen lifters stick or springs break, both of which would cause the valve to hit a piston. Now I'm looking for a motor for a '99. On the class action issue, and being yet another lawyer ;), I have been a member (only because I held stock) of several of the class actions that were the rage against IT companies when the stock did not perform as well as expected. Cisco was one that I recall. When reviewing the final settlement documents it was clear who the winners were . . . . . however I did cash my $158 check . . . . .
  7. Ok, it's been a long cold winter. Changed the fuel filter and drained the tank. Added 4 gallons of fresh gas and no change. Symptoms . . . to start car pedal needs to be depressed about 1/2 way. The car will not idle. If the pedal is release it die after hard "chugging" for about 10 seconds. After starting if I keep the car over 3000 rpms it will keep running but not smoothly. Any thoughts?? where I should start. Thank you. Marc
  8. Thankyou. Refueled right before problem, drove about 15 miles and then problem started. No recent work No oil, or anything else, coming from exhaust. I didn't have time to work on it this weekend, but will start with replacing the fuel filter, then deal with a full tank of gas. Cheers.
  9. Over 18 months of trouble free running of our '99 996 (127k on the clock), and today the car starts running like it has 2 cylinders rather than 6. Plugged in the reader and got the codes mentioned in the title. So thanks to the fault code listing on this site, I learned what I already knew . . . ie misfiring in cylinders 1, 2, 3 & 6. I will start with the usual suspects this weekend and trouble shoot the ignition system. I did not have the car running when I read the codes. Should I try that to see if I get a more precise indication of the problem?? Of course any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated. TIA Marc
  10. Sorry . . . committed the mortal sin of not searching before posting. Three other threads on this fault code. Marc
  11. '99 C2 Coupe. CEL light came on, hooked up Scantool software and got P1531. Software said low side a/c sensor. DME 5.2 Engine codes says Camshaft Adjustment Bank 1. I did not reset at this point to see if the CEL returns with the same code. What am I looking for?? Thanks in advance . . . boy these new fangled toys are fun!! Marc
