  1. I live in the Cayman Islands where the average daily temperature is around 85 degrees year round. Summers are up around 90 and around this time of the year it may drop to around 75 occasionally. I have a '99 996 C2 6-speed. There are never more than 2 people in the car and it is used as a daily driver only. It has Continental SportContact 2 tires. 225/40 ZR18 in the front and 285/30 ZR18 in the rear. Based on my location and car usage what would be the recommended pressures? Thanks.
  2. Ah. Then i suspect it is all related as i've been digging around in the center console a lot. Moved the ac controls down in place of the lower shelf, added cup holders above the head unit, changed the head unit to a cdr-220, ran several cables from the back of the head unit down through the firewall above the accelerator etc. Where is the carped level control unit? Also if i remove the right dash speaker can i access the airbag connections through the speaker hole? Thanks
  3. Thanks. Is this referring to the passenger airbag in the dash? I've recently updated the stereo speakers, including the ones in the dash, so perhaps i knocked something when removing and replacing the right dash speaker. Possible?
  4. The airbag light came on this week on my '99 996. Durametric says it is fault code 31 - ignition circuit, side airbag, passenger. I tried to clear the fault with Durametric. The light does go off but comes back on after a few seconds. Is this something i can correct or does it need to be done by the dealer?
  5. I have a cdr-220 connected to a cdc3 cd changer. I do not want to change the head unit but I would like to connect an ipod to the system. However unlike all the cables and other options i have found online i DO NOT want to disconnect and loose the cd changer. I am not fussed about charging the ipod or seeing track info on the head unit. The ipod would mount on the dash somewhere but i want a high quality input rather than an fm modulator. Is there anything out there that will take the cd changer output from the cdr-220, split it to the cd changer and the ipod, and give me a manual switch which i could route and mount discretly in the cabin to select between the two? I know i could put in an EQ or sound processor between my head unit or amp that adds an additional aux input but i would prefer a simpler solution if possible. Thanks
  6. Are there any adapters around for fitting 6 3/4" speakers in place of the standard rear speakers in a 996? I know the depth is not an issue but it looks like i am going to have to do some serious modifications to the side panels to get them to fit and even then I don't think they will go in flush. Any suggestions?

I want to replace all the speaker wire in my 996 before installing new speakers and an amp The previous owner did some real patch work on the audio system and the more I dig into car the more I realize I need to start from scratch. The car has 6 speakers (some OEM and some Pioneer) all with wires, so can I remove the speakers, attach the new wire to the existing wire, and then pull the old wire out thereby pulling the new wire through? I run a computer company, and this is how we would replace computer cable. I also need to add a new wire for the rear sub so I planned on doing this by attaching the new wire to the existing rear right speaker wire so that it gets pulled through at the same time. Where do the cables terminate? Is it above the accelerator pedal? I am going to add a 5-channel amp so I plan to attach two speakers to the head unit and four speakers plus the sub to the amp. Which two speakers should I connect to the lower powered head unit? I'm going to put 4" Infinity in the dash, 5" in the door, using the existing Porsche door bass modules, and hopefully 4x6 in the rear (assuming I can make them fit). The car had a Bazooka in it when I got it and it seems to be a recent high powered unit. The power cable is already in place for this so I'd prefer to leave it if possible. I need to run a new speaker wire though because the previous owner spliced cables from both rear speakers and then spliced them together and connected them to the Bazooka. Somehow I don't think that's the way it's supposed to be done!!! Appreciate any feedback and advice and also suggestions on which speaker wire to use. Thanks and have a safe New Years eve.
  8. I know there are a ton of threads about this, and I have reviewed a bunch of them on this and other sites, but most go above and beyond what I am trying to do. I have a '99 996 with a stock stereo system (CDR-220 upgraded from a CDR-210, 6-disk CD changer, M480 amp, 2 dash speakers, 2 door speakers and 2 rear speakers). The only addition is a bazooka behind the rear seats that was added by the previous owner. I am not sure how the speakers and bazooka are connected but they all are working and there are no other components (amps, subs etc) in the car. Of course the sound is crap, as everyone knows, so for now I just want to replace the dash and rear speakers and perhaps the amp. I don't want to do any physical modifications so the new speakers need to fit into the standard space provided. I have already purchased two sets of original Porsche speaker grills to reuse for the new install. Question 1. What speakers should I get for the dash and rear? Question 2. Can I replace the M480 amp with something more powerful but keep the CDR-220 head unit? I know a lot of people think the Becker/Porsche head units are crap but they look good in the car and I can't stand the plastic/bling look of the more modern head units. Question 3. Is it worth keeping the bazooka installed? Thanks in advance for your help. T
  9. I'm a little disappointed by the exhaust sound on my stock '99 996. I only got the car a few months ago and I love the car and the performance. However the exhaust sound simply doesn't do the car justice and based on all the forum topics related to this it seems to be a common observation. I live on a Caribbean Island, and am lucky to drive 20 miles a day, so I don't really want to do the full $5000 exhaust replacement job. Instead I was thinking of getting the Fister modified muffles along with an air intake kit. Is this combination likely to give me a nice noise boost and if not what else should I consider? Thanks.
  10. Bought a used '99 996 in September. Great condition and thrilled with the car but it has some very prominent 'bubbles' on the top of the leather dash. Under the bubbles the dash itself feels flat so there is no warping. I live in the Cayman Islands so it is hot every day of the year. The interesting thing is that at the end of the day the bubbles are completely gone and the leather is nice and tight. In the morning, when the dash is cool, the bubbles are back. As an experiment I used a hair dryer one morning and low and behold the bubbles eventually disappeared. Any suggestions on how to stop the bubbles from reappearing? I've seen a few posts about injecting glue into the bubbles with a syringe. I'm not an expert on leather but is there anything I can apply to the dash when it is nice and tight that will keep it that way. Thanks.
  11. I have a '99 996 with the original CDR-210 head unit, 6 disk cd changer and M480 amp. I am considering switching out to a CDR-220 to get the AUX input for an iPod connection. Would this be a plug and play upgrade and would the 220 give any performance improvement? If not would a CR-23 switch make more sense, assuming it is even possible? I know the stock systems aren't great but I prefer the look of them in the dash over the more modern units. Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

  13. The transmission in my '99 996 needs some additional repairs and therefore I am considering getting a replacement refurbished transmission rather than continuing with the repairs. Does anyone have any experience with, or can recommend, a good company for refurbished transmissions and is it likely they will offer a trade-in credit for my existing unit?
  14. I'm having the dash in my '99 996 removed in order to replace the a/c evaporator housing. Is there anything else I should have the techs check while the dash is off since I don't plan to remove it again?
  15. Just bought a '99 996. It appears to have the stock M490 audio setup with a 6x40W amp, CR-210 head unit and a pair of dash and rear speakers. The previous owner had upgraded these speakers and also fitted a bazooka unit behind the rear seats. There were no door speakers but the wires were there so I picked up a set on eBay and put them in. The guy I bought them from had an M680 amp + DSP control unit that he threw in for $25. Is there any benefit at all to swapping out the m490 amp for the m680 one? Also I've read that the M680 unit will not work unless the dsp controller is connected so will the wiring harness for the M490 setup include the connector for the dsp controller?
  16. I just got a '99 996. It only has 47K miles. Took it in because the clutch was making a noise. After a review the mechanic has advised replacing the clutch and a few bearings in the transmission. He also checked the RMS and IMS and they both looked fine with no sign of leaks. My question is should i follow the 'if it isn't broke don't fix it' approach or should i be proactive and replace them both since the transmission is out anyway?
  17. My '99 996 needs new pinion and counter shaft bearings. Unfortunately the local Porsche dealer tells me that these two bearings require 25 tons of force to press them onto their respective shafts. Is this correct? I live in the Cayman Islands so if this is correct, and they can't find a shop locally with a press, they will have to send the shafts and bearings to somewhere in Florida to be mated. Do these bearings really need that much force for a correct installation and if not are there any other installation methods that can be tried if a suitable press is not available? Thanks
  18. I just had both condensers replaced and the AC is blowing super cold air. However it is actually so cold that I have water dripping in both footwells when i go around corners and last night i had condensation around all vents along with window misting. (FYI - I live in the Cayman Islands so it is always hot). The next morning I also had a significant amount of water in the passenger foot well. I've played with the temperature, going from hi to low, but the temperature of the air blowing doesn't change. Even when set on high the air flow doesn't get any warmer. Does this mean I have no heater? The fan speed adjusts but that doesn't really help. I don't know the technical details of the 996 AC system so is this likely to be a faulty AC control unit, faulty heater core or could it just be something as simple as a disconnected wire or faulty connection?
  19. I'm a new owner of a '99 996 C2 looking for some advise as to my next step. My clutch pedal is extremely stiff and squeeky. I'm coming from a 2 year old VW Golf GTI 6-speed and driving the 911 with the stiff clutch is very different. The dealer said the previous owner installed a 'racing clutch' so i'm not sure if the symptoms I am seeing are normal or not. When i press the clutch lightly I get a rattle and when i press it all the way down i get a whinny shrill high pitched noise. The car makes some rattling noises when it starts although these seem to stop or at least become less apparent after 30 seconds or so. However this evening i noticed that when parked and running there is a rattle from the rear right of the car that stops for about 15 seconds and then starts again. I am thinking about taking it to the dealer on Monday and have them drop the transmission and check it along with the clutch, IMS and RMS. Does that make sense and is there anything else I should have them look at? FYI, they have already done a major maintenance service on the car which included changing the oil and filter. There was nothing in the oil or in the filter and there are no oil leaks. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks
