  1. Sorry, I misheard... He used ATF (porsche-spec product) on the Tiptronic; Redline 75w-90 on the LSD...
  2. Oh boy....... The Tip and differential use totally different types of lubricants, the TIp uses an ATF like product, while the diff should have a 75W-90 gear oil in it. If he really put the same thing in both, I surprised it works, much less makes noise.............. (*&^%^!! What's the right fluid for the Tip? Differential fluid should be Delvac 75w-90 then?
  3. got it. He used Redline 75w-90 LS on my Tiptronic transmission and the differential.
  4. Thanks, Spiff, the only thing he's not done is replacing the gas tank itself... What is the "Tank vent leaking"? What to check on this item? BTW, I know on older cars they'd by-pass the gas recovery system, but on 997, is it possible? If so, what's to look out for and how is it done?
  5. Hi Silver_TT Thanks for the reply! Here's what I got the info from about the tires: http://porsche996turboblog.blogspot.tw/2010/07/issue-clanking-noise-while-accelerating.html The wheel bearings have been repacked and service. Regarding the type of fluid for Tiptronic, is it the same Mobilube PTX that is used for the manual transmission that is recommended? Both the transmission and the differential fluids have been replaced not long ago; however, I can not recall if the noise happened after I had replaced the fluids... I'm not sure what type of ATF was used, but will check asap! Maybe this is the cause of the noise?! Thanks.
  6. Hi All: I've had this mysterious grinding noises for about 2 years... I took it to a local repair shop today and the owner told me he's heard the same grinding noises on a dozen cars and still can't figure out where the noises come from. The car is a 2002 996TT with tiptronic. Whether it's on 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th gear, at around 2000 RPM, when under a slight load (accelerate), a distinctive grinding noises can be heard; the noise seems to originate from the drive shaft (center to front, but not from the rear of the car). This would last for a short second. As soon as you pick up speed (RPM) the noise would go away. I've read some place, where Porsche made a public notice that this happens to a specific tire set (the Michelin PS2). The grinding noise comes from the front differential. Porsche says it's not a problem. Some ppl with the same tire set never experience the problem. Or some ppl with different tire set still experience the problem. Do you guys who own 996TT experience the similar issue? It never causes me any problem; it just bothers me somewhat... BTW... What's the proper differential oil for 996 TT? 75~90 spec or higher? Thanks guys. CW
  7. Hi Everyone: I'm asking this for a local repairman who got stock on the Vapor Recovery System... The car is a 2007 997 Carrera 4S with 60K KM on it. The PIWIS faults are : P0456 "Evaporative emission system leak detected (very small leak) and P0455 "Evaporative emission system leak detected (large leak). The mechanic has replaced the 1. gas vapor recovery tank, 2. the solenoid (I guess a valve on the engine's intake end), 3. gas cap, 4. the connecting hoses checked for leak. None of these steps corrected the faults. The faults were reset but would re-appear after couple of days driving. He's clueless as to what else can go wrong. Help from anyone? Thanks! CW
  8. yep, nothing short of catastrophic... happened to me last week on a freeway. spent like a hundred or two to have it fixed (welded). i heard there was 3 pipes. i only fixed the one that broke, which is the easier one to fix; the other two require further tripping of the engine, I was told. can't believe this happens to a supposedly 'reliable' car...
  9. sorry about that... it's 2002 996 turbo, unmodified. The car runs fine, just this deepr roar when pushed... from the exhaust perhaps?
  10. Just noticed that the engine starts to emit a deeper roar (where it wasn't like that before) when accel at around 3000RPM. But holding at high RPM without acceleration the engine sound seems normal. What could be wrong? Thanks! CW
  11. Hi, just wondering if 285/30/18 is a safe alternative to the 295/30/18 on 996 tt? The revolution/mile is 836 (for the 285/30/18) vs. 827 (for the 295/30/18). The diff is ~1% The 285/30/18 tires can be found much cheaper than the 295/30/18 tires. Thanks. D.
  12. The 285/35/18 has much cheaper alternatives (Taiwanese and Korean tires) than 295/30/18's, which is why I'm asking if this is OK. The rear tires just wear off too fast (even for regular driving, they go out at about 10~15K KM) and cost too much... So, if I change the front to 225/45, the rear will work with 285/35?
  13. Suppose the front tires spec remain the same, the rear set changed to 285/35/18. Will this ruin the diff? Or any other close tire alternative with 18" rear wheels? Is it possible to disengage front diff and drive normally? Thanks!

  15. Hi All, My car's bettery is pretty new, but one week without driving the car, the battery becomes weak. When the car (996tt) goes into low-power mode (15 mins after door lock), the current meter at the battery terminal shows 0.81A. Normally, it would be 0.03A, I was told. The after-market bits, like radio/GPS/receiver, have been removed. I've not done other mod to the car. Where can this leak come from? Thanks. D.C.
  16. Hi, I posted this earlier but didn't get much help... I came across this article, which is very similar to the noises I've been hearing from the past year, except mine is with Tiptronic. http://porsche996turboblog.blogspot.tw/2010/07/issue-clanking-noise-while-accelerating.html#!/2010/07/issue-clanking-noise-while-accelerating.html The noises appear on 2, 3, 4, 5th gear, when RPM is around 1800~2000, under slight acceleration. The noise lasts only 1~2 seconds; a grinding/rattling sound coming from under the front area. I can't be sure if the noise occurs right after I've repaced the rear tires (same spec, 295/30/18, Michelin PS2) early this year, as the article suggests the noise is due to rolling tolerances of the Michelin tires (the same brand as mine)... but the time seemed to coincide. Any fix or suggestion as to how I can live without these noises? (The tires are still new... so I don't want to experiment with new tires, as they are quite costly.) Thanks! D.
  17. Thanks. So I guess if I were to have it done by an independent shop, I need to get IPAS separately from the dealer or I can take the car directly to the dealer.
  18. Hi all, I just bought a remote key head from Suncoast (with barcode). I went to a local repair shop that has the Porsche diagnostic computer and was told that I needed a certificate (that has a special code) from Porsche as well. What certificate was he talking about?? Is this necessary? Thanks! DC BTW, I have the 2002 996TT.
  19. Car was mfg'd 7/2002, very close to the release of the .04 version, which according to above was 11/2002. Is the TCU difficult to get to? I'd make a visual of the sticker on the TCU. And also it has been silent for 15K miles since I owned it and only recently started to make that noise; this sort of weeds out TCU being the main (or only) culprit... Reading the POSES again, my car didn't jerk under acceleration and didn't have the noise when moving from standstill. The noise only occurs momentarily on 3rd gear at low rpm (2000). PIWIS did not give any error messages on the Tiptronic. D.
  20. Hi, Just had TCU reset (Using PIWIS, Tiptronic>Reset Adapater Values), still had the grinding sound, but less and shorter in duration. I did carry out the test drive and 10-min idling instruction as above. I don't know if it's the test drive that wasn't aggressive enough or maybe the torque converter itself needs some sort of servicing. I've read a bit and understood somewhat about how torque converter and the lock-up clutch work; is there a serviceable part in the converter that require regular maintenance? I believe the grinding sound I'm describing is from the lockup clutch at the moment of contact? This is just a bit annoying but otherwise fine without causing me additional problem. Any comments? Thanks. D.
  21. oh, ok. I'll take the car to the local mechanic and try to explain to him the problem and the fix. He's got a PIWIS and can probably reset TCU free of charge. Thanks again. d.
  22. Thanks Sunnyside for the tip. I use the car as a daily driver, so stop-and-go is common in the city. Spirited drive is thing of a rarily as people here are equipped with in-car recorders and that they are happy to report to the police a Porsche-driver who does crazy moves... The mechanic told me that this is a problem with the Torque Converter and most people have this without fixing it. I remember reading somewhere that resetting adaptation is turning the key to ON position without starting the engine for 60 sec?? Thanks. d.
  23. My car is 2002 tt with tiptronic. On the 3rd or 4th gear, when RPM is slightly under 2000, when I hit the gas, I hear a short grinding sound underneath the car that lasts only about a second, otherwise the car goes just fine. When the engine is reving pass 2000RPM, this never happens. Or when the car is in 2nd gear, this doesn't seem to happen either. Anyone knows what this grinding sound is?? Thanks.
