  1. I just got the news of a cracked cylinder head. 61k miles on a 99 C2 Cab. New engine from Autofarm in the UK with Silsleeve cylinder liners. With the dollar at $2 to the £ the cost looks scary - $20k!!!! Not amused.
  2. OK folks worst news confirmed today. Total engine failure. Car is now with Autofarm having a Sillsleeve engine fitted. Porsche Uk sent me a lovely letter - f*** off was the essence of it. Motto of the day - don't get mad - get even. I wonder how many of these have faied world wide. Maybe I'll make it my mission to find out and shame their lousy technology. Watch this space.
  3. Thanks for the reply. My car has now been trailered to Autofarm in the UK who are going to carry out the specialist investigations. It doesn't look good though. I wrote to the UK MD of Porsche Cars UK and have had a reply saying they are looking into it and in discussions with the local dealer. Let's see what happens. In any event I am going to write an article for Total 911 Magazine.
  4. Reading this with a Toasted 996 engine with 61k on and a full MDSH isn't much comfort. As Jim would say, reliable my arse. Correct Jim
  5. Thanks for the replies. It's not being driven and I will be calling a few places tomorrow to see what best next steps are. How many of these engines have blown? It sucks. 61k with a full MD history and this car was £72k new - now it needs a new engine. If you read the article on the Hartech site it just sums it up. BAD DESIGN. Lee thanks for your comments. This is toast - I feel so angry - Porsche need to stand up here and take some pain. They repleced my buddy's boxter engine out of warranty when it blew.
  6. Lee this is exactly what has just happened to my 1999 996 Cabriolet. I am fearful that this is the infamous engine sleeve problem that has been plagueing 996's and Boxters. Did you try Porsche to see what they had to say? I am thinking of starting a world wide campaign to sortthis out. Porsche know this is a problem and in some cases are making ex gratoa payments out of warranty and in others are not. It stinks.
  7. Help. The coolant warning light has come on and now gone off. Initial investigation shows oil in the coolant and the oil is frothy. The main dealer has suggested that this could be bad news - does anyone have any ideas? The car has 62k on - I checked the oil and water levels 7 days ago - oil was clear. It's never used any oil or water or leaked anywhere. Car seems to be driving fine just now and isn't showing any warning lights or other problems. Cylinder head gasket?
  8. The Alternator on my 1999 996 failed and the local main Porsche dealer quoted a staggering £571 - yes 571 UK pounds for an alternator!!!!!!!!!!!! Then there was an hour labour to fit. I got a brand new Bosch alternator from a parts supplier in London including courier for £220 - on an exchange basis. And guess what - when the old one came out - exactly the same - a Bosch - and identical to the new one. So by my reckoning the Porsche box and the part number cost around £351 - now that is brand power!! And no they can't claim it was cost of holding spares etc because they didn't have one in stock!! And I see that in the USA the parts can be sourced for 200 - 300 dollars. Long live rip off Britain.
  9. You can put 18" wheels with 285 tyres on the back and they are fine. If you go to PWS Wheels in Blackpool UK (google) they are selling 19" wheels that they say will fit the C2. Personally I would have thought the ride quality was poor at that level. The other factor is tyre pressure. Porsche recommend 36 and 44. I find this way too high and the same guy at PWS reckons 30 all round is far better.
  10. Richard, you are a star. I am in Washington DC next week and so have emailed them to try and get samples posted to the hotel. I've also persuaded my US buddy who I am meeting to do same, so one way or another I should have 4 or 8 to bring back. I'll make them freely available in the Uk if anyone wants one. Cheers mate.
  11. Hi - I have the Fabspeed cold air flow mod on my Carrera 2 Tip - I recall seeing somewhere in the forum that you guys in the USA had found someone who makes a cap/plug like a pterol cap that fits neatly over the air pipe which if I remember correctly was a yellow plastic thingy. I am trying to get a couple as I will be in the States next week. Can anyone remember what this was? I think there was even a picture. Cheers.
  12. Fantastic glad you like it. I have had a couple of test drives and you're right you just don't want to give it back!! I haven't sold my car yet - it just takes time and then I'm on the look out!!! Woo hoo. Have a great Christmas and enjoy that car.
  13. Hello everyone. Seasons greetings to all. The light behind the oil pressure guage has failed on my 996 C2 Cab. It sort of died last week and with a careful placed thwack (thanks Batman) it came back on, but has now died again. No amount of Arnie like treatment will persuade it to come back on - so I fear it needs to be replaced. Two questions..... 1. What bulb do I need? 2. How do I get at it without dismantling the whole of the front of the car. There is a speaker above the area where you might think it would be possible to access the back of the guages - is this the way in? Thanks as ever to everyone who takes time to read this and reply. John PS Car is still for sale (in UK). No sensible offers will be refused.
  14. Folks if anyone is looking for a car - I am selling mine as I want to upgrade. Full details on pistonheads - or email me through this forum for more details. John http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/111613.htm It's £28950 and a lovely car.
  15. I am starting to look for a 996 Turbo to replace my C2 Cab. I would welcome advice from current owners and any hints or tips. I really would like a Tiptronic as I have really liked the one I have now - but open to thoughts. I am in the UK and I have a budget of up to £50k for the right car. Any views?
  16. Hi everyone. In the run of bad luck I am having with my car the latest gremlin is the ignition lock. The key has been difficult to insert and remove for some time now. Now the steering lock doesn't engage when you remove the key and the lock has a strange feel to it when you turn the key - like the various springs/positions are not engaging correctly. How difficult is it to remove the lock and strip down and maybe it just needs a bit of TLC - it doesn't seem like anything broke - but is clearly not right. I am now worried about not being able to insert or worse remove the key or even worse stop the engine (it's a tip so not easy). Any ideas what the possible part replacement numbers might be and do I need new keys and so on.....could be expensive. Thanks
  17. I have the same rattle on my 99C2 Cab. It sounds like a spring buzzing or rattling and is very annoying. I test drove a Turbo recently with the same noise and very much worse than mine. I think it's probably a loose piece of the window mechanism - I'll bet Porsche know what it is as it seems so common. Do let me know if you solve. John
  18. I think you will find that you need 285 30 18 - it won't be right with 35's I have 285's and they are fine - woth good wheels they are the business.
  19. Well. The OPC have had a look. They reckon that they can't tell which door lock is faulty - and so it's a question of replace the left one and if that doesn't do it - replace the right one. Do they think I look dumb? They have quoted 1.6 hours labour plus parts and a total of £270 per side. I don't understand why the PST didn't pick up which side the fault was on. I am now not convinced that they know what is wrong. The central locking switch inside the car works fine and both doors lock and unlock perfectly. This is mysterious. If I lock the car with the key fob and then press the key again quickly, I get one short horn sound. If I lock and unlock with the key normally I get two horns. Ideas? That's sounds right - they quoted 1.6 hours - actual time 30 minutes!! Last year they quoted 1.6 hours per wheel for brake pads - whilst the car was in for service so already on the ramp with wheels off. I did all four in my garage at home with jacking each wheel up separately in 2hrs 30 minutes. I need a job with Porsche - I'd make a fortune on the mechanic bonus scheme or have very quiet days!!
  20. My 99 MY C2 Cab has developed a very irrittating fault in that I can't lock it!! Whilst this has pleased her indoors in that it significantly increases the chaces of ot being stolen - it is slightly troubling. The symptoms are: When you try and lock the car with the key fob, the central locking activtaes, makes a follow on noise and then unlocks itself with the horn sounding twice. The same happens when you unlock the car. If you use the key in the door, its pretty much the same and it just won't lock and stay locked. If you are inside the car, the swicth on the dash does lock the car and unlock as normal. As far as I can see all the lcoks are operating and nothing is open like a centre console or boot etc. I am taking the car to the OPC for a read out but am afraid that they will start with the usual nonsense of lists of parts to be replaced with no real idea of what is actually wrong. Does anyone have ideas? The clunking sound sounds like it is coming from in front of the windscreen - is this the location of the cntral locking unit? As always. Thanks
  21. OK so MOSFET might not be the greatest HIFI In the cosmos but it is a massive improvement at a reasonable cost over the supposed Porsche HIFI upgrade. Two amps woofers etc is goingto be close to 4 fugures or more and the head unit I used was £150 and throws out some serious sound.
  22. I have noticed that the ABS is coming in more frequently when I brake hard - and it seems to just be one wheel - the front offside. The discs were replaced at 25k miles 3 years ago and now have 56k miles - pads are around 5k old.... The car has just been serviced, no warning lights are showing, tyre wear is even and the tyres seem to have plenty on them - although they have covered over 25k miles. I am just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about possible causes.
  23. Hi I have a 99 C2 Cab with the Porsche stereo upgrade which is basically the Radio Cassette head unit and amp plus 6 cd setup. It is rubbish. The speakers are rubbish and the head/amp is rubbish too. So I set about changing it. In my 993 C2 I had a Pioneer Head with MOSFET chip - this basically between 45 and 55 amps depending on model yearand type but pumps out a good oomph and you don't really need an amp - it has lot sof settings to get bass power or whatever your musical tastes are. I had to change the multi cd and disconnect the Posrche amp as they are not compatible or so I was told. So basically my head unit drives the speakers direct. The shop did say that they could dis-assemble the little integrated speaker sets and put in new speakers but it was big money - £100's and didn't really seem worth it. The set up I have was around £150 for the head unit, £90 for the Pioneer CD multi and £100 labour including the special harness needed. Watch out for the alarm wire when you remove the old Porsche head as if you don't sort this properly, you get an alarm beep when you try and lock the car as it thinks some scally has stolen the radio. Easily fixed. End result, not a bad sound, nice Pioneer head unit and not too much cash. If money is no object, then......well I know a man in the UK but......
