  1. Loren This forum has been so much help that I am ashamed I didn't join before. I have signed up today by Paypal. Thanks for everything. John All explained here.
  2. There are a few TSB's where I would like to see the detail of what is in them. Can anyone help or do I have to go to a dealer? They are: 4078 4085 (there are 2 with this number 6/00 and 1/99) 4088 6110 As ever thanks.
  3. Try spraying some down in the crack between the steering wheel and the steering column cover, and turn the wheel back and forth to spread it, and see if that stops it. If the spray has one of those little plastic tubes on it, stick the tube down in the crack to spray some on the face of the contact ring. What can happen is that the spring contact blade on the wheel itself can get some fine debris (or dirt or sand) stuck in it and that is what you hear dragging across the contact ring. lubricating the contact area can break the debris free (sometimes). If that fails, then you need to take the wheel off, and clean the contact area, then re-lubricate it. I've had other cars that have had the exact same problem. If it is dirt, don't let it go to long, as it will wear a groove in the contact ring. I have had exactly the same thing. The OPC had just replaced my Top Mounts and then about 500 miles later this noise started. They said it was faulty parts and that this was a known problem. They replaced the parts FOC and it went away. Sounds dreadful and like something is cranking away on a plastic ratchet.
  4. If you look inside the lighter, you can bend the connections back and it will work fine. This happened to me as well. Thanks - do you mean the connections in the piece that pulls out or the part in the dashboard? Thanks Loren thanks for this. Do you have any thoughts on the tyre problem. The dealer just replaced front lower arms, track rod/tie rods, top mounts and antiroll bar bushes - do you think they have messed the set up?
  5. I have 225/40/18 on my front wheels and recently at low speeds with half to full lock the tyres are making a scuffing noise on the road like they don't fit properly anymore. The tyres have loads of tread left although have done 26,000 miles. They look evenly worn but the noise sounds like they are coming off the rims. Ideas? Second mini problem is that my cigarette lighter isn't working. There is power there but when I push it in, it doesn't lock in place and doesn't get hot. Anyone know if parts are available separately (ie the plug in bit from the dash bit). Thanks everyone.
  6. Does anyone know if these aftermarket exhausts are legal for UK road use. The firm says they are based on original Porsche parts - obviously modified and they are around 105dB. Anyone got any experience of them? They cost around £250 UKP delivered so not a fortune and certainly less than most other options. John 99MY C2CabTipS Like an idiot I forgot to put the link. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Porsche-911-996-Spor...1QQcmdZViewItem
  7. I am having exactly the same problem. I have just had major work done on the front end - which turned out to be the track rod ends knocking but they replaced the top mounts, and also the anti roll bar bushes and also the front track control arms. Noise gone - new noise here. I agree it does sound like some oil strategically placed would do the trick. Grateful for anymore ideas.
  8. Make sure you get the alarm wire sorted otherwise your security alarm may keep beeping.
  9. I got these for my 99 MY Cab here in the UK. They are sort of triangular and fit at the end of the sill? The part nos were 996.504.393.01.01 and 996.504.394.01.01 they were £17 UK each including tax. The OPC fitted them free of charge.
  10. It looks like the bushes in the lower front suspension arms are coming away which I understand is a common problem. I am in Manhatten in just over 2 weeks and as the UK price is quoted as £198 probably plus 15% tax - I am wondering if I could get some in the USA maybe delivered to my hotel or a work colleague in NY. Does anyone have info on local dealers or cost of this part? I believe it is the lower suspension arm. I have a 99MY Carrera 2 Cab Tip. Thanks
  11. I have a 996 and in summer replaced all the pads in 2 hours having been quoted over £700 by the local OPC for the job. A friend has a Boxster and has been told his car will need new discs and pads at the next service - cost £1500 - almost $3000!!! I offered to do the pads for him as they are basically the same as the 911 and I reckon second time around I could do them in under 2 hours. I also need to replace the discs - I am guessing this is not hard but if anyone has a good guide I would be grateful. Cheers and Happy New Year to one and all. John
  12. Jim, I am thinking of a 996C4S as a swap for my current 99 C2 Cab Tip...any thoughts? The C4S just looks great especially in Polar Silver - reminds me of my old 993!!
  13. I refitted the hard top to my C2 Cab after a crappy English Summer and now on about 50% of the times I start the car, all 4 windows go down like the start of the soft roof lowering routine. They refuse to be raised using the switches and I have to lock and unlock the car before the switches will operate. The only thing Ican think of is that I did put a bit of grease on the pins when I was refitting the roof, did I screw up some electrical contact? Anyone had similar problem.
  14. I am puzzled - can you tell me what this is? I have a 99 Cab - am it sounds interesting. Thanks
  15. Thanks to everyone. Did the brakes yesterday in 2.5 hours for all four wheels. Had a small problem for 5-10 minutes with one of the vibration pads on the backs - but got it free with a bit of perseverance. What a rip off from Porsche 1.4 hours per wheel. A right con!! Thanks everyone for all the help and advice.
  16. Thanks to everyone who has replied. I am going to get Textar Pads and new vibration dampers - otherwise will risk not getting sensors - I guess I can always add them back on later if I screw any up getting them out. Any further tips about cleaning/using ant-squeal paste etc etc very gratefully received. I think I will do a digital camera job on the work so as to share with any other budding DIY'ers. Final tips required on jacking up the car. Thanks to everyone - next weekend is the one!!!
  17. I am about to do a DIY brake job - and was wondering about these vibration pads. How bad were the old ones? Did you have to get new sensors and the pin/spring/clip kit or were the old ones re-usable? Thanks John
  18. Hi everyone. My local OPC just called mid way through my 48k service which is already a double ouch due to their normal friendly prices and a nearly new rear tyre with a nail in it! They told me that I need pads all round at the generous cost of £700 - yes almost $1300 at today's exchange rate. I am going to have a go at DIY - but the last pads I changed were in 1985 on my MK4 Cortina. I guess the principles are similar......help needed.....first up is what bits do I really need. The optional bits seem to include Wear Sensors, Vibration Dampers and new pins/springs/securing clips..... Then there are the pads...any recommendations? Final thing is jacking up the car - any hints? Many thanks John
