  1. When i had the top replaced on my old SL500, the shop that did it for me made it a constant point to never leave the top down in the winter. It can cause the top to shrink a little and more importantly, leaving it closed (i.e. up) will keep the seal tighter. He actually preferred that even during the summer months when the car was parked in the garage, that i shoudl leave the top up and not down so that it woudl maintain its shape better. Also, i'm not sure what year 996 you have but if its pre-2002 (i.e. has the plastic rear window), than you definitely want to leave it up otherwsie if its down for an extended period, you could create a line or crease in the rear windown and worst case, if its ever cold while its down for an extended period, cause it to start to crack.
  2. Is it safe to assume that a hardtop from one 996 would fit any other model year 996? To be blunt, woudl the top from a 2001 911 996 cab fit on a 2002 911 996 c4 cab?

I expect to be driving my '02 C4 cab this winter although of course not in the heavy snow and I have already started down the path of figuring out what to do for tires and rims but the real question is the top. I used to have an SL500 that I would put the hard top on in the winter and it was great. I was thinking of doing the same for my 911 as I don't want the soft top exposed to the harsh winter but I was hoping to get some feedback before shelling out the cash for a top. Any thoughts? Also, anyone have an artic silver hard top that would fit my '02 C4 cab that they are willing to part with? Thanks.
  4. Thanks for the info all. It looks like I'll be getting a second set of tires for the non-winter months and will likely get a seperate set of rims for them. Anyone have an extra set of 17" rims they are looking to part with for a reasonable price? Need them for winter use.
  5. So, as many of you know already, I'm a 911 newbie which simply means that I don't know much other than I am having the time of my life driving my cab as much as I can. I have an '02 911 C4 Cab with 38k miles (IMS retrofit scheduled for next Monday) but I live in CT and come the winter months, it's going to kill me not to be able to drive her. While I have no intention of driving her when its snowing out, I would like to drive her in the winter once the roads are plowed. My questions are pointed to those who drive their 911's during the cold winter months. I realize that I will have to get something other than summer tires, which i have on her now and I'm not looking for tire recommendations, at least not yet that is but what am I curious about is the following: How is the C4 traction in light snow? I realize its not built for it but I am curious. Would you recommend a seperate set of rims if I go with a seperate set of tires for the winter months or just swap the tires on the gorgeous rims I have already? What's the big fear over road salt? If you wash the car regularly, does it really matter that much as the cars are rust proofed, no? Any insight would be greatly appreciated as the thought of not driving her for 3-4 months is killing me. Thanks. PS - Before you start yelling and screaming, my first instinct was to use the search feature as you would have thought that this topic would have been beaten to death by now but I struggled to find much useful information on it. Blame it on being a newbie but I did at least try the search function.
  6. Whew. Good news. It was just some rocks caught up in the undercarriage. Anyway, lesson learned. I just scheduled an IMS retrofit for two weeks from today. Thanks for everyone that threw some info my way.
  7. Roadsession: Three quick questions. (1) Did you hear the noise when the car was in neutral or only when it was moving? (2) How long from when you first heard the noise to when the bearing gave out? (3) Did the noise ever go away after hearing it the first time or did it stay constant?
  8. As many of you new already, i'm a newbie just picking up my first porsche, a 2002 C4 Cab, 6 speed. It's a beauty and i'm in heaven although i am frightened over the whole IMS issue, which i plan on addressing come the winter with the LN retrofit. The PPI, which was done by an Indy who specializes in Porsches, street and track, came back clean other than an A/C issue. The rear seal was replaced by the previous owner about 2 years ago. I purchased the car last month with about 37k miles on it and since than have added another 1,500 or so (what can i say, i love driving it!). Anyway, my early morning scare. This morning, I started the car up, lowered the top, sat for about a minute in the garage, drove it about a 1,000 yards and no problems, than all of a sudden i heard a loud rattle (like marbles in a tin can) coming from the back of the car. I stopped the car and the noise then immediately stooped. I looked underneath the car to see if i ran something over and in the engine just to make sure nothing obvious was wrong and saw nothing. I got back in the car and went on my way and as soon as i started to move, i immediately heard the noise again and once again, stopped the car, got out and looked around for something in the street and nothing and of course, in the engine again and nothing. Being only a 1,000 yards or so from the house, rather than leave the car in the middle of the street, i turned around to go back home nbut now the noise was gone so i went back on my way to the gym and drove for about 15 more minutes to get there and nothing, no noise or anything. After about an hour at the gym, i started it back up, came home and no noise at all. Very weird. I was planning on getting the IMS done this winter but now i am scared to drive it. Should i begin crying now. If its the IMS, would it go immediately after the bolt breaks or can it take time. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. PS - As promised, i will get pic's up this weekend, assuming its not in the shop that is. :(
  9. Thank you everyone for your input. As recommended by many, I am going to bypass the warranty and just get the IMS procedure done this winter when i'll be using the beauty sparingly due to the snow. While i'm in there, i'll likely replace the clutch, etc. as well. Hopefully i won't have any problems before than. Thanks again.
  10. I have a new to me 2002 911 C4 Cabrio with 38k miles and i'm looking to protect myself from ridiculous service bills and of course the scary as hell IMS issue. I have read through more posts about warranty's than i can count but there seems to be a lot of confusion, at least by me. Can anyone recommend a good warranty and one that will specifically cover the IMS issue if it rears its ugly head?
  11. I don't have much purchase experience with respect to Porsche's as up until recently i was a Mercedes guy however I found the following seller to be very reputable and straightforward. He specializes in selling used Porsche's although on occassion he will sell other high end cars (i.e. Audi RS4, etc). Anyway, the owners name is Phil Cracco and his website is http://www.weissachautohaus.com/index.html He's located about 45 minutes from me so if you see something that you like and you want to get someone else's perspective on it, I am always looking for a good reason to go for a drive on a sunny day and what better place than to look at some Porsche's. :)
  12. I was a Mercedes owner as well, a 2001 SL500 that put out 300hp and it was a great car but after getting behind the wheel of a 911, there is simply no comparison. It's sort of like comparing parasailing to skydiving. One is nice and peaceful and relaxing and the other takes your breath away. My advice, albeit i am still a newbie when it comes to Porsche's is to walk away from the current car you are looking at as there are way to many conflicting stories. There are plenty of great 996's out there and i would strongly recommend bumping up to a 2002 over a 2001 as someone earlier mentioned, the extra's are worth it (glove compartment, cup holders and of course, a little extra horsepower never hurts).   13. I'm a Porsche newbie and my only regret is waiting this long. I also own a Mercedes SL500 but there is simply no comparison to the 911 C4. I am in heaven.
