  1. I know it is not recomended to put the x74 on a 99 chasis but has anyone done it? I really want the ride height and feel of the x74 on my 99 C2. What would happen if i installed it?
  2. Check the expansion tank. Ask if it has been replaced. I would test drive it vigoursly then open the back and see if expansion tank is leaking --- even if it is not I might ask for a new one if it has the old part number tank. Check under the car for leaking anything. I also have a 99 that I bought with 20,000 miles. The expansion tank was busted and an oil pump was malfunctioning. IMO Porsche certification is a waste of time. Loren has a list of the stuff they check (believe me there is nothing big on the list) I would have a trusted mechanic look at closely. Also search this site for 996 problems and this will give youa pretty good idea of the kind of stuff that fails on the Porsche. I knew all of the problems with the early 996's when I bought and I do not regret the purchase. The car kicks *** and I enjoy driving it daily. Hope you purchase soon and enjoy the corners!
  3. I just finished installing complete interior carbon in my 99 C2. I love it and it looks great. There is one final part I cannot find. I am looking for the front center part on the roof that has the interior lights on them. For whatever reason this part I cannot find in carbon. Has anyone seen this part? I would even compromise and get it in shiny black -- I just hate the cheap looking grey plastic. If there is anyone out there that has seen this part available let me know please. thanks
  4. I have a 99 coupe with 26000 miles. It has the original cont tires. When should these be replaced? Is there a wear tread on them? I looked but was unsure what I was looking for.
  5. I just bought a 99 coupe with 25000 miles myself. It was porsche certified and 2 year warranty. In 2 months I have already had a little less then 4000 dollars of work done including the coolant tank, oil tank, brakes, and some other minor stuff. Most of this was covored. There is no doubt that the warranty is worth every penny. I am not sure about that company and I can tell that if you can get it Porsche certified it would probably be worth it. i have heard that porsche is very reluctant to certify a porsche not sold by a dealer but they might for the right price. I strongly recommend a warranty for any used car -- particularly a porsche -- particularly the 99 996.
  6. I just got and installed the FVD pedals. Nice looking, kind of expensive and do require drilling, specially for the brake pedal -- a real pain to drill. I broke 2 bits trying to get them in secondary to bad angle. My only complaint about them is that they are not a perfect fit sot o speak, that is that they are larger then the original pedals and the curve on the brake and clutch does not match the curve of the underlying metal/plastic piece. Luckily there are a lot of holes in the pedal so you can make it work but I have to say it was not as easy as it should be -- ie you cannot just slap these things on. Anyway -- other thing is they really do not add much -- I mean I see them and like them but you really cannot see them from outside the car or while you are driving and it is not like they add performance or anything. They are total eye candy only and if I had to do it over I might have saved the 100 or so bucks and put towards a new CD player or speakers or carbon or something. Hope that helps.
  7. yes I know you are right but the dealer is such a pain to work with. Slow to get the work done, no personal service, never return calls etc etc. I would love to take it to someone that i might actually have a long term relationship with and get good service from. Now that my car has been at the dealer for 2 weeks and getting a lot of work done and I have been reading about the unreliability of early model 996's I am actually considering trading in and giving more money to get a 2001-02 model 996. And just the sound of this sounds crazy!
  8. I am sure this is a stupid question, but I am new to the used car game. I have a 2 year warranty on my 99 996, do I have to take it to the dealer to get serviced? Or can other mechanics honor a warranty?
  9. Thanks for that. I have to admit I am shocked that they do not pressure test the coolant expansion tank since this is such a known problem. Anyway -- lets put it this way - this is the first time I have bought a used car and I have learned much from the experience. Hopefully it will not cost me much to learn anymore!
  10. Well this is my first post - I am a new Porsche owner. I just bought a 99 C2 coupe with 22000 miles. Love the car. It was "certified" by Porsche dealer before I purchased. They assured me that it had been thoroughly serviced as per their routine certification process and infact the car was in "excellent" condition. -- That was 2 weeks ago. On the way home 2 days ago I noted that the temp light was flashing. I searched Renntech and figured that the coolant expansion tank or cap was bad -- no big deal, I now know this is a known problem. Took it to Porsche dealership to have it fixed as I had gotten a 2 year warranty. While inspecting the car they found that not only was the tank cracked ... but also there was a lot of oil in the lower pan and there was a crack in the oil "expansion" tank and that the coolant motor was bad. OK, I was thinking the coolant tank was bad enough but I must say jesus christ -- what do they check in the certification process it they do not check these things. I mean it seems like "certification" means a nice wax job and carpet cleaning! I just was wondering if anyone else had this kind of experience and do you think I should report it to Porsche main office? (luckily all except the coolant tank was covered by warranty.) David Long
  11. Where did you find this part -- I think I just had the exact same problem. I searhed the part number you gave but could not find it. Where did you get this number from?
