  1. Well I finally found the time and did the repair. It was quite easy although at first, afraid of overtightening the bolts, I untertightened them. The compressor still did its job but it was loud. Then I gave them a more vigorous tightening (previously they hadn't even reached the stop --oops!) and now all is well. I hope there was no damage from it.

Thanks everyone. I still can't believe it was so cheap ($23 with shipping).

Now on to the next problem: I have to figure out if something needs to be done about oil consumption (120k miles, uses 1qt every 400 miles). No visible leaks, so it must be burning the stuff.

    Hi,

I had a look at the site you mentioned (www.1stvwparts.com) but couldn't find the repair kit. Could you please post a link to the kit you purchased?

    Thanks

  2. How on earth do you remove the coolant tank ?????

I've removed the air filter housing and the plastics around it but can't see where the coolant tank is bolted in

Mine is a 2005 cayenne tt thanks in advance

I have the split expansion tank in my office. I can take some pics of back and underside to show the mounting locations.

IIRC I think we had to remove the entire airbox to gain access to the expansion tank? My brother was the one who did most of the work, so I'll ask him.

  3. Hi All,

Need your help again guys. I’ve got this weird problem whereby I am unable to open the front passenger side door (UK based car) using the external door handle. However I am able to open it using the interior handle.

I’ve got access to an inspection camera which I was able to feed inside the door (after removing the grommet) and the main mechanism (supporting bow handle > http://www.design911.com/Supporting-Bow-Door-Handle-Porsche-955-Cayenne/prod7182/ ) appears to move freely when I pull either the interior or exterior door handles. This leads me to believe that it may be an electrical problem rather than mechanical?

Thanks to this website I was able to find a guide on how to remove the interior door card (http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/32744-door-panel-removal/ ) but before I attempt this I want to make sure that it’s not some thing simple or a setting that I’ve overlooked? Has anyone else experienced a similar problem and if so how did you resolve it?

BTW I have a Key-less Entry System on my vehicle.

Thanks in advance and I hope you can help me.

  4. Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. :thankyou:

To have the auto tilting mirror you have to move the selector to the right side dot. If you leave it to the left or in the middle it will not auto tilt for reverse. Personally i hate the feature and never use it.

The air suspension fault can possibly be fixed with a new piston ring for the compressor. I have the same issue and have been too lazy to fix even though I bought the repair kit for it.

    HTH

The control stalk for the mirror is in the middle setting, I will change it to the driver setting and see if that makes any difference for the auto tilt?

Before you do anything big, do you know how old the main and if fitted the reserve batteries are ?

The mirror tilting is a default setting, which if it just started happening without someone playing with the dashboard could indicate that power was lost to a control unit and it reset to factory. When the batteries get bad on these all sorts of strange things can begin to occur.

Battery first then clear the faults and see if they re occur.

IF a compressor is indicated you can get a VW refurb kit and do the job yourself, its behind the passenger side plastic side skirt.

I am not sure how old the battery is on the vehicle, can someone tell me where it is located so I can check? Also where is the fuse box located?

When you get the Air Suspension fault you say it operates as normal. Next time you get it see if you can change the ride height? I occaisonally get a fault and it won't let me raise or lower the vehicle until I shut the pig off and restart it or clear the fault with Durametric. I have purchased the VW rebuild kit but am waiting for a combination of the fault getting worse and myselft having less other vehicle projects to work on :)

From memory I think I was still able to change the ride height when the ‘air suspension fault’ message appeared on the screen? I will need to double check just to make sure though. Do you have a link for the rebuild kit and is there a fitting guide available?

  5. Hi,

I need your help with a couple of problems I’ve been having with my 2004 TT recently.

First Problem; I’ve noticed that occasionally I get ‘air suspension faulty, go to workshop’ type error message on the dash. When the error message appears there doesn’t seem to be any adverse affect and the vehicle drives like normal. Is it possible for me to find out what the error code is without putting the vehicle on to a diagnostics machine? Also are there any other items I should check?

Second problem; How do I activate the auto tilting mirrors when reversing the vehicle? When I purchased the vehicle the mirrors would automatically tile when I selected the reverse gear. However this function seems to have stopped working lately?

Any advice on the two matters listed above would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Ak

  6. Like most OEM's Porsche prefers to refill these systems under vacuum to eliminate any air pockets, which can be very problematic in alloy cased and headed engines. Some DIY'ers say that you can do it without vacuum, but the vacuum system leak tests the entire system, refills the system, prevents any retained air, does it all in about 5 min., and does not require any future coolant level top up, so it is hard to argue with. We use vacuum on literally everything that comes through the shop. We premix the Porsche OEM coolant (only) with equal amounts of distilled water (only), then refill the system.

The vacuum tool will cost you about $100, as long as you do not buy it from Porsche...........

Thanks for the advise, do you have a link for this tool? Looking at the design of the expansion tank this tool should also work on other VW/Audi/Porsche Vehicles?

This is not a common problem on the Cayenne and yours is the first I have seen. There is no bleed valve on the Cayenne and they do self bleed through the expansion tank rather well. I would also verify operation of the thermostat, cooling fans and that the water pump is actually circulating coolant and doesn't have a damaged impeller.

Thanks for the advise. There car didn't appear to be overheating when the expansion tank failure occurred and has been running fine without any issue for the last few months until now. Where is the thermostat located on the engine and is it easy to get to? Any pics or workshop diagram would be very helpful.

  7. Hi,

I'm new to this website and new to Porsche ownership and was hoping that I could get some help with an issue that's just occurred with the coolant expansion tank of my 04 Cayenne Turbo.

I recently purchased this vehicle back in June after selling my range rover. At the time I did quite a bit of research and discovered the issues with the coolant pipes, carden shaft bush, ignition coils etc that were prevalent with the early Cayenne models. After viewing a few vehicles that were less than desirable I eventually found a Cayenne in pristine condition, and more importantly with all the aforementioned work carried out by the dealer. I've been using the Cayenne everyday since and can not fault it.

Yesterday as I arrived home I heard a loud popping type noise when I was parking the vehicle. After stepping out I noticed a pool of fluid on the floor, located at the right hand side of the vehicle. On inspection I realised that it was coolant fluid and refiled the expansion tank to try and locate the leak. At first I thought it might have been one of the rubber hoses in and around that area. After removing the airbox to gain access to the area I found that it was the expansion tank that had split (see pics below).

Is this a common problem with the cayennes and has anyone else had this issue? I've got to say that I expected a lot more from prestige manufacturer such as Porsche. The expansion tank was only manufactured in Sept 2003 and it should really last the lifetime of the vehicle!!

Now, this is were I need your help; I've ordered the part and should get round to fitting it this weekend. Can anyone tell me if the cayenne has a bleed screw of some description and if so where is it located? What is the process for refilling the coolant?
