  1. The garage is in the shape of an "L". One wing has two double doors, the shorter wing has one double door. This creates six native parking places. There are two of those parking lifts on the longer wing, adding two more spaces. So that makes eight. Additionally, if you drive in the door on the shorter wing and turn left, you come to the dual post service lift. And usually something is up in the air there. On the back wall of the larger wing there's another double door so you can drive through to a parking / working pad behind the building where the car trailer lives. He got lucky and sold a company to Cisco back in the dot com boom. Bill
  2. A friend of mine (who's really loaded) has a couple of those garage parking lifts. I'm not sure how much height you need to use one. He puts leaky British cars on them, so they are equipped with dril pans. Attached are two pics showing their use. My 996 is the one in the middle of the one pic. :-) Bill
  3. I have a Porsche parts catalog CD-ROM, and I was wondering if this protection plate would be listed in there? I searched for that part number in the 996 USA and DE sections and got no hits, and a visual scan of the pictorials didn't show anything. The CD I have is "Originalteile - Katalog / Genuine Parts Catalogue" "The data on this CD-ROM represent the technical status from April 2005." Bill
  4. According to the Carnewal website, the plate weighs 0.8 kg. That can't be much of a skid plate.
  5. Is it a good idea to add that skid plate? Do you happen to know the part number, and where's a good place to get it? Thanks, Bill
  6. I read tidbits of people with an engine skid plate, sometimes recommended for lowered cars. Is this a Porsche factory piece? Anybody have a picture of one? Thanks, Bill
  7. Vertical forces from the wheels come through the hub carriers into the coil-over-shock arrangement. Nothing special about landing after being airborne. I don't see why there'd be a vertical load component on the center of that subframe. It's there to handle tension and compression loads tying the two sides together. But, in any case, I agree with you, if you don't jack there, or the engine crankcase, you're not going to lift the car without using the jackpoints. I did see a pic someplace (don't remember where) where a jack had been used just forward of the jack point. I haven't examined my car carefully enough yet to decide if I'd want to do that. One major thing I have learned in my short term ownership of the 996, is that 99% of what I knew about Porsches and 911's from the past is useless on these! Bill
  8. You mean the aluminum subframe? Where I've pointed the green arrow in the attached pic? Looks awfully delicate to be carrying a 2,000# in a direction it's not designed to bear any load. Of course, if it works, it works. (back in my 914-6 days I could jack up the entire car under the tunnel with one floor jack and spin it around end-for-end in the garage) Bill
  9. Thanks, Loren. I should have searched before posting. But is jacking up the entire rear end of the car by the engine crankcase (or that delicate looking rear suspection subframe) really a good idea? In addition to the pieces in question being of a somewhat fragile nature, and expensive as all get out, it's all rubber mounted. Those bushings couldn't be intended to handle loads like that, could they? Bill
  10. When I complained about that smell the dealer used a product called FrigiFresh (not 100% certain of that spelling) made by BG. It helped a lot, but I don't think the one application is 100%. I used Google and found a place selling it. They aren't giving the stuff away. And when it arrived I was shocked by the small size of the aerosol can. I've also been leaving the windows open a bit.   11. After using a floor jack at the rear jack point(s), where do you put jackstands? Thanks, Bill
  12. I recently purchased a 2002, and my wheel bolts are also rusty. So where many others on the dealer's lot. I intend to hit my with the bead blaster and then repaint. And perhaps my Soft Socket left over from ages ago when I had the alloy wheel nuts will fit these. I believe Audi solves this problem by putting black plastic caps over the bolt hex. Bill
  13. Does pin 3 (orange/blue) go to car's controllers other than the DME, for the dealership diagnostic tools? Is there any documentation (official, reverse-engineered, or whatever) available on that interface? Thanks, Bill
  14. For a 2002 US model 996, does anyone have documentation on what Porsche uses pins #1, #3, and #9 for in the J1962 OBD-II connector? (these pins are left undefined by the OBD-II spec, available for manufacturer use) Thanks, Bill
