  1. Interesting. I've always wanted to play with one of those.
  2. Thank you for the reply. I guess my oil consumption is about normal when compared to your car. My RMS is very similar to yours except I do get a little bit of oil dripping.
  3. Thank you for explaining the theory behind what is going on. So putting it all together it makes a lot of sense. I've been familiar with rolling codes controls (which I knew the Liftmasters were), and am familiar with assigning a control to a door (we have 4 so I got used to that quick). So this isn't that hard, except for one thing--the ceiling height is about 14'. My Corvette doesn't have any type of homelink system, so I've got the controls in the center console. I guess it won't hurt to keep one in the center console of the Porsche as well. :D Thank you very much for the replies. It clears up a fairly vague section in the owners manual.
  4. Thank you Loren. Good write up. I just wanted to make sure I had the torque spec right. It feels weird to work on a car without the service manual to reference to. :( I'm so used to answering all my own questions that way.
  5. RMS is pretty straightforward to diagnose...take to dealer. But a little oil consumption may be normal. If you are seeing tablespoons of oil where you park it each night, it's more likely a RMS issue or another seal issue in the rear. But nothing is 100% until it is diagnosed properly. If it continues, I'd get it to a dealer for review....it's under warranty, and a RMS replacement is no big deal nowadays. I stopped by the dealer yesterday and met a very active member of our local Porsche club as well as the service manager. They were looking over a new Cayman S. I also talked to the parts department and sales managers. They just opened not even a month ago, but were already doing RMS seal work. In the parts department, that's the single most purchased part so far. :D
  6. I bought the 8mm hex socket today from Sears. The correct plug torque is around 37 ft/lbs, right?
  7. You may have to erase all codes, then hit the 'programming' button on the motor overhead, at the same time hitting the homelink button on the vehicle. Takes two people. I've done this on some of my other vehicles (I have 3 liftmasters). Ahh, so you do have to actually do something on the opener unit. It sounded like that from the instructions, but it seemed a little far fetched. I guess it's the same procedure for adding a regular remote control to the opener. I've done that before. :D Thank you for the assistance.
  8. Well, last night while I was having fun discovering I had a rms leak, I also tried to program our gate and one of the garage openers into the Homelink. The gate worked fine, but I can't get the garage opener to work. I read the section in the manual on the "changable code section," but I can't really figure out what those instructions are in relation to. :( Any assistance appreciated.
  9. Well, I just bought a 2005 Boxster and in under 4000 miles, it looks like I may have at least one major problem--the dreaded rms. :( But I also noticed something else that may indicate a problem. I had to add one notch worth of oil (0.4 liters) after my trip cross country (approx 2000 miles). Since some oil is dripping from the rms, I can understand having to add some. But the drip is very slow--maybe 10 drops after a week while the car is sitting, and about 10 drops while driving on the highway for 20 minutes. What I'm wondering is that enough to add up to the 0.4 liters I added or is the engine consuming more than it should? Any opinions appreciated.
  10. Thank you for the reply. Looks like I have a lot less oil than I originally thought. That makes me feel a slight bit better.
  11. Thank you Loren. That makes me feel a little bit better as the oil leak is very hard to see unless you look for it.
  12. I hate to bump such an old thread, but I have some questions about the underside pictures in the first post. What is that brownish coating on the rear suspension parts and underside? Is that some sort of factory undercoating? What did it feel like? Is it a sticky film or something more solid? I'm trying to figure out if I have a bunch of oil under my rms, or just a little and some sort of undercoating. Any assistance appreciated.
  13. Well, I got home to AL and a friend noticed a couple of drops of oil on the garage floor. I finally got around to examining it closely and it seems I have the dreaded rms. :( At only 4k miles!
  14. Seems like I may also have the problem. Just turned over the 4000 mark today during some test drives. :(
  15. Thank you for the feedback. You have to remember, I'm in Alabama. Most of the guys that do work around here can't even work on Japanese cars correctly, and those are the dealers that are "trained". The last thing I plan on doing is letting them work on my $50k German machine. There is a fairly active Porsche club locally and I've had recommendations from them to go to either Nashville or Atlanta for service routine service. I'll probably look into the same for this problem. I spent some time under the rear of the car after I put it up on ramps. The entire underside on the rear is coated in what looks like a goldish undercoating--but it's not undercoating. It's old hardened oil. :( I found some fresh areas after driving it for about 20 minutes and putting it back up on ramps still running. I crawled under while it was running and could see some seepage in the seal where the tranny and engine meet right beside the holes in the tranny where you can see the flywheel. That sounds like the rear main seal. :( I'm going to give the dealer I bought it from a call and see if they had their Porsche/Ferrari people actually inspect it. If they did, then they knew about the problem and didn't tell me when I asked. There was a few other minor problems they didn't tell me about as well. If there's any legal action I can take, I'll be taking it while I try to get this mess fixed. I should've just spent a few extra thousand and got a new one. :( This sucks. :(
  16. I got back from CA a week ago (bought the car in CA and drove it to AL), and my friend noticed a small puddle of oil on my garage floor. :( It was engine oil. I checked the oil level and it was mid-way. It never leaked in CA at in my friend's garage for the 3 days I had it there. I looked at it briefly and it seemed to be coming from the drain plug. But I was tired after driving and just went to sleep. I'm going to look at it today since I haven't spent any time with the car in over a week. Any suggestions as for what to look for? I'm going to look specifically at the RMS and the drain plug. Anything else to look for?
  17. Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard a height like that referred to as tall. You made me feel a lot better about my own height. :clapping: (I'm 5'5" and the tallest in my immediate family!) Here in the US, if you're not on the upper side of 5'6", you're short. I've ridden in both Boxsters and Miatas (and now own a Boxster) and enjoyed your comparison between both. Best of luck with the new car!
  18. Thank you for the reply. :D I picked up the car Weds and the only problem with it that I've found so far is the vents. But that seems to be common and is a warranty item. The dealer would've already fixed it but the parts are on backorder. It's a 2005 Boxster with the Tip S transmission and 1700 miles. I love it except that I haven't quite figured out the front of the car yet and have already scraped the front twice when leaving parking lots here in CA. :cursing: I live in Alabama, so starting today I'll be driving cross country with my new baby. :king:
  19. Can somebody please post a picture of the party which in fact is broken? Thx Oli <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi Oli, I've just joined. I have the same problem and have attached the offending part (well, this was the offending part in my case!) Regards Stu I just bought a 2005 Boxster with 1700 miles on it and I have the same problem. :( Is there an easier way to get to the side vents? One of my center ones is still ok.
  20. I rented this car while in NY for use in a my best friend's wedding. From the time I sat in the car, it just fit me perfectly. I was amazed by the handling and how I felt in the car. I the 2 days I had the car, I felt like I had been with it for two years. Well, I was sad to give up the key when I left, and so started a search for one of my own. And I think I may have found one that I will purchase by the end of the month. :clapping: But as with all vehicles, there is always those little things to watch for. I haven't yet purchased the car and have the option to still back out if I find something really disturbing. So in your 987 experience, if you were looking for something wrong, what would you look for? What are some of the things to look for that indicate future or past problems? Any opinions appreciated.
