  1. One of the main things to consider is the Rear Main Seals on these cars (and intermediate shaft). This is a costly repair when the seals start weeping oil. I have one 911 that so far has not leaked, and the other one did. One of mine has 26,000 miles and the one that leaked had a whopping 29,000 miles. Porsche is on about the fifth engineering attempt and appears they finally got a set that works. The cost for the one I just had replaced was $1600.00. Also if you are looking at a manual transmission, will want to check out the life of the clutch....Another fun and expensive repair. If Tiptronic, not to woory. If AWD, clutch replacement is even more. These are fun cars and actually very dependable for daily drivers....Most normal maintenance can be a DIY if you are a little handy. Otherwise labor at the dealerships (at least here near Chicago) is about $90.00 / hour. Good luck

So it is useful between the time it gets too cold for top down..until the snow starts and the car goes in storage. Also nice for longer trips as it is quieter. DC

  4. Sorry to see and hear about your car. Many are correct about settling with your insurance Co. and asking how much discount to keep the car. You could sell for a ton $$ on eBay. I would disagree about getting an attorney. Unless you have some cheap insurance company, most are reasonable and would offer fair market value for the car. Many use the same guides as people use to sell cars, or do market research. I would suggest ONLY looking to an attorney if you get to an impasse or feel you are not being treated fairly. Attorneys would only add costs to the whole deal...which would come out of your cut. Most insurers will consider a "cash settlement" which is where they will offer you an amount (market price), minus the salvage value of the car.... EX: Care worth $30K could sell at salvage yard for $1500.00....Company gives you $28,500 and let's you keep the car. Worth asking anyway. Good luck!

I have the part ordered, but since it seems like a pain to reach, and there may be other issues, I may just break down and drive the hour to the Porsche dealership. I also need them to fix the air bag fault anyway....That light is on as well. A shame to have these problems when it only has about 26,000 miles <_< I guess I will see how lucky I am feeling when the part comes in. Thanks again guys.
  7. Hi Loren, I did lay under the vehicle last night and looked up through the plastic covers. There is a hose about 1" that is very near the CTS and where the clamp attaches it to the water neck, it looks like a little orange corrosion (like perhaps a leak?). There is never any noticeable coolant in the garage, or from what I can see, nothing on the engine?? I can try to get a photo if that will help you. Thanks! Donnie
  8. HI, My wife's 2004 Cayenne V6 had CEL recently and the fans sound like it is a jet engine. Put a diagnostic tool and got the P0117 code, which should be low voltage on the Coolant Temperature Sensor. If I clear the code, it runs OK for a bit, then comes back on and runs rough at start and the fans come on high. So I think I know that I need to change the CTS, and I found it (I think) from another post (what a terrible location!)...I found the part at a Porsche dealer online and it is on its way. My Question is: Does anyone have any diagram, shop manual info, tips, or instructions to help me remove and replace? Since it is so hard to reach and see, any help would be great. Thanks in advance if anyone can help! :thankyou:
  9. Good question. I have seen many and varying prices and they all look like the same maker. Thought I would give them a try :angry: What a mistake! I fought with them for days and finally got all bolts to line up...As I began to torque them down, it became obvious that the end holes are drilled too close to the the outlet pipe, and by the time you (I) notice that the bolt is cocked and cross threading. It also appeared that they hang lower than the name brands, and will likely hit bottom in certain conditions. I will humbly admit after all that work and loud exhaust leaks I ended up spending several hundred dollars for a flatbed to the dealer, and more to re-install and tap out the cross threaded holes! Maybe I am just an idiot...But iI have installed many items, and had no luck with these. If you look at the pictures closely, you can see that the end holes are too close for the bolt head to clear. I have seen on Vertex website, a reasonably priced SCHNELL ($299) set, that looks more like a factory fit....Once I shake off the horror of stripping out my manifold, I may try those :) Good luck
  10. Hi, I was hoping someone could help shed some light for me. On my wife's 2000 996 C2 Cabrio, I noticed the other morning that when the wing was up, a few (left 1/3) of the lights on the wing were not on. When I had a chance to look at it, I figured how to remove that light from the wing and popped it apart to find that there are in fact what appear to be replaceable bulbs? As I was checking them, (I manually depressed the spoiler switch to raise it first) - I started the car and turned the lights on...Neither the third brake light or the spolier light came on at all. I had my daughter go in and depress the brake pedal.....The two normal brake lights (L&R) illuminate, but nothing from either the third (center) or the spoiler light?....Nothing at all.... Any thoughts of what I should begin checking? They were on that morning with some burnt out, and that evening....nothing at all? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks! Donnie
  11. Hi All, Was hoping someone may have the wiring scheme for the stock amplifier in a 2000 996 with standard sound system. I think the amp part number should be 996 645 301 01...I think. I was hoping to connect some componets in the bonnet and the diagram would be very helpful. Thanks! :renntech:
  12. Hi, I think there are only two models a Nokia and one Harman model. I would say your best bet would be to look on eBay. They are on there all of the time and usually pretty cheap. Just look for the one that is compatable with your head unit. Looks like you may also need a wiring harness as well, if it is cut....Unless you have the connector, and then you can just splice tham back. Good luck to you...
  13. Hi, Thanks. I have tried to attach some close-ups for you. I saw the ones on the link below, and was not terribly impressed (although they are probably better than mine:)). Sorry for the large file size, but that wa sthe best way to get a close-up. The grilel material can be purchased on eBay for not too much $$, and it was actually a little fun to make them. I took apart the care, cut the grilles, glued the bolts, waxed and re-assembled in one weekend (time for glue to dry too....) As for the covers, I really like them. I had to paint them to match (ocean metallic blus), an they fasten with the double sided moulding tape. I used an entire roll.....you know....so they don't fly off at 170 MPH :) I got them from a guy in Germany a while back, but have also seen similar ones on eBay.   14. I haven't seen much online, but I was able to fashion a set from stainless aluminum I purchased on eBay. Many people use cable ties to fasten them, but I did not like the way it looked. I flipped the bumper cover up on end, and used 2 part epoxy (plastic steel), and used 4 small bolts (glued the heads in first to the trim piece in the middle. then formed the mesh, and slid down over the bolt threads from inside, and used lock washers and nuts. I think it came out pretty good...Though I am no expert. I attached a photo of mine (I hope...first time I tried:)). It is a GT3 front, but similar to boxsters and original 996. Good luck!
