  1. Hi jmbarroso

I think that you should arrange a test drive of a demonstrator car from the Porsche dealership. This way you can immediately eliminate whether it is your mind or if there is an actual problem. Just give them a call and say that you want to do this at the time of dropping off your car.

I have been in your situation before for something similar and was absolutely sure about performance and noises but had to give in to it being a figment of my imagination. I would still swear blind that I was right at the time, however I don't notice any issues now.

As I said, the best judge is to try another car and then you may have evidence to substantiate your claim.

    Hope all goes well

  2. Just got it... Whoooaaaa... I love that deep groan from the exhaust :-) A quick notice here: the "basic" (no changer and no PCM) audio head unit is NOT compatible with MP3 CD-s!

Csory, thanks for the info. It all helps!

Congratulations with your new car! I'm sure you'll love it more and more each day - it feels so much more substantial than a Miata.

    Have fun!

  3. Can anyone enlighten me on what this mp3 playing function is.

I have mp3 files , a cd burner , Itunes and an ipod ,but am unfamiliar on how to utilize this function in pcm.Do I have to burn mp3 files on a disk?

I am told that a disk can hold hundreds of files ?How do I do this?

Easy. Create the playlist that you wish to burn. Go to Itunes>Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Burning and select MP3 CD. See attached image.

    Then burn. ;-)

  4. There were two PCM2 software/firmware upgrades for PCM2 - one in August and one in September. Your OPC should have TSBs on these (the US/Canada ones are here in the TSB section). It does not say all the changes but there a number of variations that were shipped - that all need updates.

    Have a look at TSb 12/05 9110 PCM2.1 Navigation Update - dated Sept 7, 2005

    For example:

Overview – Part numbers/software versions of the PCM2.1

Part Number Date of Introduction* Software Version Update Version

997.642.101.0x Up to CW 42/04 04035xxx Standard production status

997.642.103.0x Up to CW 42/04 04035xxx Standard production status

997.642.131.0x Up to CW 42/04 04035xxx Standard production status

997.642.133.0x Up to CW 42/04 04035xxx Standard production status

997.642.101.1x As of CW 42/04 04202xxx Update of existing Model Level A

997.642.103.1x As of CW 42/04 04202xxx Update of existing Model Level A

997.642.141.0x As of CW 16/05 05024xxx Update of existing Model Level B

997.642.143.0x As of CW 16/05 05024xxx Update of existing Model Level B

    * CW = Calendar Week

    Thanks Loren,

Just checked my version and it is 0402JD1 - looks like the OPC will need a bit of education on updated software. Still not sure if it will play MP3's though. Also I'll have to splash out £496 GBP on a new navigation DVD.

Loren, what's the situation w.r.t. discussing where I got this info from? Or do I just say that I know that there was a TSB on Sept 7th 2005 discussing this?

    Regards

    Stu

  5. My car is a Jan '05 UK 987S w/PCM & Bose and just missed the April 05 change where the unit was able to play MP3's.

Would someone know if a firmware update would fix this or be available? My OPC (Colchester, UK) says that it is not possible but I think that he is giving me the 'safe' answer.

Failing this, I will have have to be patient and wait for the Denison MOST link (which I believe should be out Q1 2006??) and buy an iPod.

This thread originally started over in the boxa.net forum and someone recommended I put it over here, at renntech.

Loren, would you know the answer to this?

    Thanks in advance everyone,

  6. Well I've now got 2500 miles under my belt in my 987S and feel I can now offer some opinions on PASM.

While getting used to the car I didn't really experiment with PASM for the first 500 miles so the car remained in normal mode for all but a few seconds....... normal mode offers good body control in nearly all conditions and the slightly softer damper set up soaks up the worst bumps you're likely to encounter in the UK without upsetting the car balance. Basically I'm happy with normal mode for day to day commuting as it gives the perfect balance for comfort without compromising the cars sharp handling.

From 500 miles onwards I started to play with PASM sport mode...... initially I found I'd turn it on and almost immediately turn it off again as the extra firm set up is much harder than normal....... however I forced myself to spend time in sport mode and found I soon got used to it........ in fact I often forgot I was in sport mode and had to glance at the button to see if it was on or off! Sport mode makes a marked difference to the handling of the car...... cornering is much sharper and grip levels transform from great to amazing!!!! In some of my favourite test corners at speeds where the car would start to drift wide in normal mode the same speeds in sport holds the line much better. Body roll in sport mode is virtually zero and the nose hardly dips when braking hard...... I could be wrong but I'm 95% sure that braking is also better in sport mode....... when braking very hard in the dry ABS is usually fairly obvious in normal mode (in the last few feet) but when in sport mode ABS hardly ever seems to cut in.

Sport mode is fine for all but the worst roads IMHO and I now have it turned on most of the time....... normal mode only gets used in very bumpy conditions or when the wife is in the passenger seat but even then she doesn't complain at the ride when we go for a spirited drive (sport mode is always on then)..... maybe because shes too busy screaming!  :D

Anyone that doesn't mind a firm set-up in exchange for enhanced handling will love PASM sport mode and don't fall for the magazine reviews that say sport mode is best left for track days.

What do other PASM users think?

My next mission is to start experimenting with Sport Chrono......

Nice review and I agree entirely. I keep mine in sport mode most of the time. I especially like it on motorways (in the UK) you can literally flick the car from lane to lane with minimal body roll. Especially noticeable at high speeds. I see it as a major bonus. When in roadworks or speed bumps around town you just turn it off. I think the car (in standard guise) feels very tight and secure ... PASM enhances this feeling B) . Money well spent! I'd definitely spec it again.

    Hope this helps everyone.

  7. jwolfe  Welcome to the club!  My 987S had three out of four break in the first month.  I did a search and found 8 or 9 guys on the UK sites had the same problems with the 987 air vents.

In my case the porsche tech had to pull the entire stereo unit out of the dash to get the center vents out through the bottom.  A 2 hour job for him so unless you're bored or masochistic take it in.  The replacement parts seem to be OK.  5 months and they haven't fallen off.

    Brad

Can somebody please post a picture of the party which in fact is broken?

    Thx

    Oli

    Hi Oli,

I've just joined. I have the same problem and have attached the offending part (well, this was the offending part in my case!)
