  1. Ahh, so it's a pirated cable and pirated software. Got it. Given that I sell software for a living, I can't support this. Thanks for the guidance.
  2. Has anyone used this connector and software with any success? It's a knockoff from China, looks like. $169 for 5 of them. What am I missing here? http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/479931985-Durametric-PIWIS-cable-wholesalers.html
  3. I bought an OBD2 scanner for my iPhone and checked it. No engine codes. Would I need to take it to a P-car mechanic to get extended codes? My car consistently does this in the morning. I live in a moderate environment (San Francisco) and it's in an underground condo parking garage, so the temperature is a VERY steady 65 degrees, 24x7. It's an enclosed space, so when I pull out, it really sounds as if: I don't know how to drive the car I'm trying to showboat the engine Or both. Any more advice? Thanks!
  4. OK. Good to know. I will pick up a reader. It only happens at start up. Not when it's been running.
  5. My new-to-me '04 996 ttx50 has been doing this to me ever since I've received it. This may be "normal behavior", and that's why I'm throwing it out here... When I start the car up in the morning, I have to back it out of my space in an underground parking garage. I'll back it up maybe 75 feet (necessitated because of the parking garage configuration), and when I engage the clutch to switch it to first, the engine's idle picks up from 1K to about 2K. It's a bit embarrassing because the garage is indoors and even an unmodified exhaust of a Porsche is pretty loud. Is this normal behavior? This tends not to happen when the car is warmed up. I understand that when the engine is cold, RPMS are generally increased to warm up the cat converter faster. Thanks, -Mike
  6. Thank you! It was in the same color scheme as my 2004 BMW R1150 GS. Had to buy it! :thankyou:
  7. Here is what my '04 996 ttx50 Cabrio looks like with matte black intercooler ducts. I put on 5 coats of plastidip... Took me about 90 minutes, with only about 9 minutes of actual work (rest of it was drying time between coats). I did this in my condo shower -- very little cleanup. I think it looks good. I was thinking about putting the glossifyer coat on top of the Plastidip, but my wife suggested that the matte might look better because its in sync with the matte cabrio top. I think she's right. It does look pretty sharp. This is my first time working with PlastiDip. I'm impressed with how easy it is to do right. My next project will be to PlastiDip the wheels. There's an interesting video on YouTube where it shows "Fonzie" using a large plastic bag to protect the rotor and pads. You can PlastiDip with the wheels right on the vehicle.
  8. Will do. Still haven't received the plasti dip yet, but looking forward to doing them. I'm thinking that it's such a minor operation that I can probably do them in my condo (downtown SF) parking lot and not even worry about going outside. If I keep over with a respiratory ailment, well, that's why you won't see pictures.
  9. Try this one. I use it for my BMW motorcycle as well as the 911: http://www.amazon.com/Airman-C60A54-Tour-Pump-Compressor/dp/B002UEKXOW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337700194&sr=8-1 Self contained, but the built-in gauge is ****e. Use a discrete gauge.
  10. I just ordered Plastidip (black matte) for my '04 996ttx50 Speed Yellow Cab. I've got the Turbo Twists, and I am going to check out how they look with a matt finish. If I don't like matte, I'll put gloss on them. If I don't like that, then I'll just peel them off. Also, going to plastidip my turbo inlet covers to black. I think the yellow/black contrast will look pretty good. I'm hoping. I'll post pictures when I get them done.
  11. Interested. I used to wrench on my BMW motorcycles, but I'm not technical at all. Most I did from a motor perspective was to retorque the heads on my old 83 airhead. Oil, plugs, etc. On my newer '04 GS, I've replaced the standard halogen with HID lights, handlebars, springs, etc. Would love to tweak my car (04 996 TTx50) with other folks who are knowledgable.
  12. Thanks! I think I will call my indy and ask, and while at it, do a couple of other mods too (weaker clutch helper spring, 997 SSK, etc).
  13. Wondering what the typical cost to replace a clutch at an Indy is? Also, wondering of the Indy can set the "engage point" on the travel of the clutch? This one (though it's slipping) is set to release too high IMHO. I keep on killing the engine. I feel that a little lower would allow me better feel. Any input on those two questions? Thanks in advance.
  14. Very good to know. I'll give it 90 - 120 seconds to mellow out then. Thanks!
  15. I know, right? Well, I did when I got the car, but didn't have the wind stop at the time, so didn't pay attention. But there it is: RTFM. Indeed.
  16. Frack! Never mind. While futzing around in the front boot, I noticed a couple of obvious snap hooks. My apologies. Ignore this thread.
  17. I've gotten into the habit of letting the car/turbo "cool down" a bit before shutting her down. That *seems* to alleviate the initial smoke the next morning. I've been trained not to let the engine run w/o moving because I primarily ride a BMW motorcycle and didn't want to get into a engine heating problem. I only let it run for about 3-5 mins and it seems to be good enough. The other "fix" for this is to go easy on the engine before tucking her away, but, I don't know.... How do you go easy when you're driving a TT? Is this even possible?
  18. **** PLEASE IGNORE -- Answered my own question **** Couple of questions regarding the wind stop storage bag... I bought a wind stop from SunCoast and it didn't come with what I recognized as a usable storage bag for the wind stop. It came with something that looked like it should fit over a spare tire, and may or may not be able to contain the wind stop. But looking on my rear deck lid, I noticed a canvas piece of kit that I then reached in and took out. Lo and behold, it's a wind stop carrying bag (albeit, a bit faded). It's got these two metal snaps on it, too, which I can't figure out. So, I've got a couple of questions: Where do you store your wind stop/bag when you are not using the wind stop? Do you store in the rear deck lid or do you use the precious space in the front boot? If you use the rear, is it safe there with the cabrio mechanism? It looks like the wind stop cover has been back there for a couple of years with the PO. What do the metal snaps on the cover snap to? (pictures attached). The snaps are on the lower left of the canvas bag. Sorry for ****ty iPhone quality. Thanks! -Mike
  19. Thanks, guys, for the additional detail. It's white smoke, which I guess is very comforting.
  20. So, whatever happened? What was the diagnosis and fix?
  21. I'm responding to a fairly old post, but I had this problem on our AMG CL55 (another German car with tasty German insulation). I heartily recommend www.rataway.com. We used it just once on the AMG after we noticed the problem (big-assed rats nest in one corner of the engine). No more problem. Speaking of which, I should renew it. It's been a couple of years since I've used it on the AMG, and I should do it as a precaution on my 996tt. No financial interest in the company... just a satisfied customer.
  22. Thanks, gang, for the advice, compliments and warnings. I'll be getting an oil change, soon, just so that I can keep a baseline on it and start from scratch. Re: overfilling. Indeed, I did read the manual. Pretty much cover to cover when I first got the car. The lack of a dipstick is a little unsettling, but I'll just have to remember to check it at every fill up. Thanks again, folks!
  23. Yes...There are lots of posts about this on the site. Totally normal. If you look in your owner's manual you will also see that the oil consumprion is normal. The smoke happens occasionally on my 997 TT and is normal also. One way to minimize this is to drive the last few miles or minutes easy before parking.....Or when you pull in to the garage, let it run (idle) for a minute or two to run cool oil through the turbos and clean out any lying in the cyclinders...This will not totally prevent it from ever happening, but makes it happen less. Also....When you park them and do not drive them daily since these are boxer engines....gravity works against you! Congrats and enjoy! DC Thanks, DC, for the comfort. I'm guessing the old adage is still true for these: "The wrong oil (for top off) is better than no oil." Right? Or did I just get myself into a whole mess of problems? Cheers!
  24. Just figured the picture process, I think. Here is a picture with the top up in a garage. Cheers!
  25. Thanks for the info. Good to know. I'll just relax on it and mention it to the mechanic next time. No fault codes or idiot lights, so I'm assuming that I'm OK here. As soon as I figure out how to post a picture, I'll put one up. This is an awesome and advanced site, but I just haven't figured out how to post a picture? Clues? And I was a programmer for many years :-). I'll have to drag my real camera out soon once I get it detailed... Cheers! -Mike
