  1. Howdy, I've just gone through a similar situation with my 1999 996 C2, and discovered the clutch pedal switch actuator (2' long bent metal bar that presses against the micro switch) needed to be opened up a bit. It's a gray switch and is mounted at the rear of the clutch pedal stem. The symptoms were finally clear to me when I pressed the clutch all the way to the floor and the car started consistently.
