  4. Thanks. They have a bunch of different programs and it will depend on the year/model/type of your car. For my 2001 c4 996, the program I am eyeing covers most things (less wear items) for 2 years 12,000 miles. The cost is about $4k.
  5. Hello! After being hit with repair bill after repair bill on my 996, I am thinking of getting a warranty, offered by a local Porsche dealership. I would love to hear any good or bad experiences with CNA National Warranty! Thank you!
  6. Hi! Since I've had my 996 tip car4 I've experienced a whirring sound between 40-65 mph that can be modulated with the accelerator pedal. If you back off from the accelerator, it goes away almost entirely. A trustworthy indy shop suspects strongly the ring and pinion and says that a new tranny is the way to go. I want to know if there are any other options out there. Some questions: 1) Can the ring and pinion be repaired with the existing tranny? 2) Porsche remanufactured trannys are $9700. Can I buy it somewhere else cheaper? Thank you in advance!
  7. Good tip on checking the codes for the suspension. I went through the maintenance records goinging back to 40k on the car. The shocks were never done according to what I see. But I thought bad shocks make the ride more bouncy, not harsh/rigid...? The records show there was some suspension work done on the car. These parts have been swapped out over time: (2) control arms 996 341 043 06 (2) sway bars 996 343 073 05 (2) tie rods 996 347 131 04 (1) control arm 996 341 053 16 Besides the shocks, are there any other items that should be swapped out at 80k?
  8. Do you think that replacing the shocks would make a big difference in ride comfort? I have 80k. Don't think they've been changed. Anybody done this and can speak to the change in the ride comfort on crappy roads?
  9. I probably responded too quickly and irresponsibly; I don't know if it is the AOS and I am sorry to make you worry about it now. It could be many things. Getting the code from the engine is the next step. FWIW, my AOS cost me $2700 but that was because I have a tiptronic and I also did the rear main seal (RMS) and intermediate shaft bearing -- two additional weak points on the 996. Good luck and keep us posted!
  10. Have you had the AOS done? Sounds similar to the early signs I got before my AOS blew: But with that said, rough idle can be due to a lot of things such as mass air sensor, etc.
  11. My AOS catastrophically failed not too long ago so I can tell you my telltale symptoms that I ignored right before it failed. The idle was rough. That idle problem got progressively worse until sometime at a red light the engine would just die. There was also white smoke on most mornings after start up. RIght before it failed the check engine light came on. Then within 1 day, driving down the highway white smoke started pouring out of the exhaust. After the AOS replacement the idle is quite controlled and I hardly see any white smoke when I start her up.
  12. Thanks. I've been thinking about that. By dampers do you mean shocks? If so, what brand is good for comfort but keeps the awesome performance? I have a c4. Also, is there a way to tell if it needs replacement?
  13. Removing the lens is a nightmare. The best plan of attack in my opinion is to remove those two screws and drop the whole unit. Then you can replace the lens or light bulbs much easier. There are three wire harnesses which snap out once you are in there.
  14. Hi, A stupid question: do any or all TSB get fixed for free on used Porsches? Are they like factory recalls or are those different? What is the intention of a TSB? Just to let customers know they need to fix something?Bottom line: is there anything I can get the Porsche dealer to do for free on my 2001 996 c4? :thumbup:

  16. Thank you so much for the quick reply! I too am thinking about selling sadly. I will seek out another 996 to drive before that however. Since the car is new to me I have no idea on how to determine if it has a stock suspension or not. Maybe I could ask my mechanic?
  17. Hi guys, I am a new owner of a Porsche 2001 996 Cab Car4 for about 1 month now and I am disappointed. Sorry to say this as this is a Porsche enthusiast forum!! Heresy! But I find the car simply intolerable in terms of noise, the seat and the ride. Having never been a Porsche owner, I don't know if its just my car or Porsches in general. Here in the Northeast there are few perfect roads and my butt feels absolutely everything. The car is rattling from everywhere despite my efforts to subdue surfaces with felt tape. On top of that, within 45 mins my butt starts hurting from the seats. Even the engine sounds strange. I hear whirls and hums at different speeds. Rarely do I hear the nice growl of the exhaust. Now I am just being a spoiled brat -OR- is there something wrong with my Porsche? I could just be a spoiled brat :o I would be interested in hearing the experiences of other 996 Cab owners in the Northeast where the roads are atrocious! Thanks!
  18. Here's the reply from GMG Racing: "We use a high temp paint- 2 stage to paint the calipers. We do not have a DYI instructions although removal and install is straight forward we do recommend professional install if you are not familiar with this operation. Cost is $850.00 for the set."
  19. I would take them out and then tinker with them with the license plate light on. Hopefully you can determine where the bad contact is as you move it about I took mine off a while back and found a lot of corrosion on the terminals. If you find the same thing, I would lightly sand the copper contacts so they make a better connection. Good luck
