  1. My 2001 2.7 has it. I find it's useful for storing a baseball hat or two. Kind of useless for the manuals. If I didn't use it for a baseball hat, I'd probably put maps or CDs in it.
  2. I couldn't find this by searching past postings. How do I remove the sunvisors to take off the airbag stickers? I see 2 torx screws on one end. What do I pry up, and how, for the other end? Where do I pry from, and what's the best tool to use? Is there any electrical connection I need to worry about?
  3. Jeff - thanks for the update. I found the 2004 Audi S4 also does the three-flash when you momentarily hit the turn signal, so next time I'm at the dealer I'll ask how Audi accomplishes the triple blink. With more and more controlled by computers in various components (e.g., instrument cluster), I don't have high expectations for a simple solution.
  4. I didn't bother looking into the Cayenne since I assumed with it's trailer towing ability there would be lots of differences in the relays (e.g., to support trailer lighting, etc.). With so many VW/Audi electrical parts (and probably some BMW and Mercedes), I initially thought of them.
  5. :soapbox: Hey, this is supposed to be RennTech.org, "a place for Technical Porsche Discussion." I could have gone to one of the more socially oriented boards for a discussion of the relative merits of using turn signals Loren, Tool Pants, anyone else - does anyone know the answer to my question, or have any suggestions of where I can get technical information on equivalent relays with the desired functionality?
  6. I actually found it pretty useful for passing traffic on the Autobahn, and figured it would be handy at home on my car as well. I think the flasher relay part number is 1H0 953 227, and it's an old, cheap, generic relay used in lots of European cars, I figured there's probably an enhanced version of the relay that does the smart 3 blink trick (just like replacing the wiper relay with an updated VW/Audi part gives you a cheap, variable intermittent wiper enhancement hack) Anybody try this before, or know of some master relay cross reference guide that will help me figure out if such a relay exists?
  7. I just got back from 1+ weeks in Europe. Drove a Mercedes (diesel) station wagon on the Autobahn. One nice features was that if you just touched the turn signal lever and released it, the turn signal would automatically blink 3 times then stop. Holding it any longer than just a quick moment and it would work just like you would expect The question: is there a replacement turn signal relay that would give the automatic 3 blink functionality for the turn signal? Maybe an Audi relay or something? Do any Porsches have this functionality?
  8. Well, now it's been almost two months, and I've put over 1000 miles on the car since having the oil separator replaced, and I haven't noticed any smoking. ... :o Forget everything I last wrote. Started the car this morning to take my wife to Starbucks and absolutely huge billow of smoke out the back! So much for my hope that having the oil separator replaced solved the extreme smoking. I drove the car yesterday as well, so it wasn't a matter of the car sitting for an extended period of time. No check engine light ever. After this weekend, the car will be sitting for a few weeks, since I have a business trip to the east coast, then on to Europe. I'll call my service advisor at the dealer when I get back and see if he has any other suggestions. Any other ideas as to cause welcome as always.
  9. Not sure the best place to post this, but since this is a tool deal and Mr. Tool Pants is the guru here, what the heck... If anyone is into detailing cars, Meguiar's online has a September special on their version of the Porter Cable polisher - 1/3 off. I'm basically cheap and ordered one, so I figured it's a pretty good deal others here might be interested in. See Meguiar's online Porter Cable polisher deal. I've used this before at one of the local detailing days at Meguiar's in Irvine, and these polishers are a no-brainer to use for polishing and waxing. I was going to buy the polisher at Lowe's for $109, but the Meguiar's deal adds a real backing plate, polishing pad and lifetime warranty. So I figured the Meguiar's deal is at least as good Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with Meguiar's, other than I've been to some of their tech detailing / brainwashing sessions and am a happy customer
  10. more marketing info at http://www2.porsche.com/wheresportbegins/pcgb.asp titled "Where Sport Begins"
  11. I also have an '01 and noticed the same exact wear for the first time when I washed my car last week. Outside rear quarter of the top. My car is still under warranty, so when I'm back in town I'll stop by the dealer and ask what's causing the problem (and if there's anything that can be done). My car only has 30+K miles, and shouldn't have this kind of wear yet!
  12. On Jun 29 2004 Tool Pants said Well, now it's been almost two months, and I've put over 1000 miles on the car since having the oil separator replaced, and I haven't noticed any smoking. I saw my service advisor today when I dropped off a friend, and mentioned it to him. He just shrugged and said maybe it was starting to go bad. Which I've learned can sometimes mean they know about the problem, but won't do anything until you bring it to their attention. I'll keep watching, but at this point, the problem appears to have been the oil separator causing exhaust smoke some of the time
  13. Since I've got a Boxster and this is the most read Boxster group, I'm posting here, but feel free to move wherever it makes the most sense/most benefit. This is probably of wide interest to many at renntech.org. I just got off the phone with (board sponsor) Sunset Imports (see top of any screen). I had seen the Porsche PET CD advertised at Suncoast in FL as one of this week's specials (see http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/merchant...ategory_Code=WS. I was ordering some small parts from Sunset and asked about price/availability of the PET CD, and their price is $9.52 :D Just thought others might be interested, given that there are forums here just for part number requests
  14. Loren - thanks for the part numbers
  15. OK  No takers, huh!? I stopped by the dealer to see their seal grey Carrera GT, and talked to the parts guy. He looked it up on PET, and said no little diffuser / rubber lip for a GT2 or GT3 because they have the whole front spoiler. I asked about a turbo, and he came up with a part number (different from the Boxster and 996) and said they're over $100!! This is for the part numbered 4 in the figure from the parts catalog Does this sound right? If no, does anyone know the equivalent part number for a turbo and approximate cost? This is becoming more a matter of principle and curiosity than anything. Since I need to replace the broken one, I should at least know my options, right...
  16. Did he have his rear fog light on? I just checked my car's rear fog light by pulling the light switch out two notches, besides turning clockwise two settings. Yes, indeed, that seems to be what the guy I saw had done. Now if that's why DFC's lights aren't the same brightness, then the original puzzle is solved :clapping:
  17. The little wind deflectors that look like little rubber lips ahead of the front wheels on the underside of my car ('01 Boxster) are starting to fall apart. My dealer said this is a normal wear item and wouldn't replace under warranty. Somewhere I seem to remember reading they could be replaced with similar items from the GT2, except the GT2 ones are a little larger (stick down about 1/4" lower than stock), and provide a little more air flow. The stock items are p/n 996 504 503 00 and 996 504 504 00 (left and right). Does anyone have the corresponding part numbers for the ones from the GT2, and will they fit right in? Any advantages or disadvantages for replacing the stock ones with the GT2 ones, i.e., maybe more brake cooling while driving through the canyons, but will my car fly off the freeway because of greater air flow by the front tires? Has anyone used these as a replacement part, and if so, what was your experience?
  18. Drove next to a relatively new 996 tonight coming back from the grocery store. His headlights were on, and the left tail light was noticeably brighter than the right. His fog lights were also on - not sure if that affects tail light brightness. When I got home, both my tail lights were the same brightness, with and without fog lights on. Might be worth checking if fog lights affect tail light brightness
  19. My car had its 30K service at the dealer just the other week. Smoked a lot, and I mentioned to my service advisor others suggested it might be the oil separator, so they went ahead and replaced it. He said there's no way to tell from looking at it if it has problems or not. No big puffs of smoke every time it starts now, and it doesn't smoke when running (so far). It's still too early to tell if this solved the problem, but I'm hopeful Replacement part number for warranty work oil separator is 996-107-023-03. No indication on the invoice what the retail price would be Depending on where you live and how good your relationship is with your dealer, you might want to check whether this is covered under the emissions control warranty
  20. I'll definitely be watching for smoke and will report back. My service advisor was joking I broke their computer with all the warranty items to check during the service (3 pages of warranty service printouts). The 4 year warranty is up early next year, so I'll be on top of it. The mechanics working on cars are usually around to talk with, but I got there late Friday and didn't want to cut into their weekend. When I had the first oil change there, I spent a lot of time talking about oil changes and got lots of interesting information.
  21. Had complained to my service advisor about fuel filling problems several months earlier, and he thought one of the fuel evaporation valves wasn't working. I had the 30K mile service done last week, and it was listed as one of the warranty items to check. Since originally complaining to the dealer, I saw the article here on Won't take Gas!!! and decided to tape up the cell phone connector with some electrical tape (and no, fuse E6 had not blown). Since I did put the electrical tape over the cell phone connector, my fuel filling problems disappeared. Tested over at least a dozen fill-ups. Before taping up the connector, at least one out of four fill-ups was a problem. Also, at the 30K mile service last week, the mechanic couldn't find any problem with filling up the car. (I even got a free quarter tank of gas from them checking out the system :) ) Just thought I'd pass this experience on to anyone else sometimes having problems filling up the tank
  22. Car had 30K service last week. Of course, no smoke when I took in to the dealer, but my service advisor replaced the oil separator as a warranty item. He said they don't usually go bad, but there's no way to tell. Car doesn't seem to be smoking now, so we shall see...
  23. Checked during 30K service and no problems found at the dealer. Service advisor said since the car had been sitting for about 4 weeks without being driven, the battery might not have been putting out full power, hence erroneous reading on the oil gauge. No indication of other fluids in the oil when they changed it, so the battery explanation sounds as good as any. With all the electronics, I guess some items are more susceptible to voltages that fall below a threshold and produce suspect results. Would be curious over time to see if others have similar experiences as all our cars age
  24. Here's a strange one... My car is at the dealer for the 30K mile service, but they haven't found what's going on with this yet I was out of town for the past month, so my car sat in the garage in its normal spot. Before I left, the dash oil level indicator was almost down to the bottom mark (even after sitting for a few days). When I got back, the oil level indicator was in the middle! It would be great if my Boxster was spontaneously producing oil (finally a Porsche that pays you to own it!), but I don't think that's the case. Has anyone seen this happen before, and if so, what was the cause? The car has been at the dealer since Tuesday (lots of other nits besides the 30K service), but it should be ready Friday. My service advisor thought it might be a calibration problem on the oil display, but it seems unlikely from just sitting for several weeks. I also complained about excessive smoke, even after the car is warmed up. They couldn't find anything wrong, but went ahead and replaced the oil separator anyway. Could the two be related (gas and oil mixing)? Anything else they should have considered that would cause the oil level to rise?
  25. It goes on the left side as part of the locking mechanism behind the little rubber bumper. Same thing happened to me and the dealer reinstalled it under warranty. It wasn't obvious (when I first got the car) how/where it went back in
