  1. Thanks for the reply. The brake duct upgrade sounded like a cool-to-have upgrade, but wasn't sure about the benefit. Since I drive the car on the street, I'll pass on the upgrade
  2. I'm curious if anyone has installed the GT3 cup brake ducts on a Boxster (as described here in Gt-3 Cup Brake Ducts. The Carnewal web site shows them fitting Boxsters as well as 996. Would there be any real benefit to these in normal driving?
  3. Let me guess - cross drilled yoyo!? I'll be travelling with a customer and colleague from another company (he'll have the car), and was just happy the customer was up for the Porsche tour. I'll see if I can get some 987 spy photos, but I was told no photos on the factory tour, and they've probably on to cell phone cameras. Maybe I'll see some test mules driving around on the autobahn :D There was a cool turbo key chain in the last Christopherous, but was kind of pricy for a keychain (not surprising given the dollar relative to the euro now), and I don't have a turbo :( Any other ideas? I'll try to check here before dashing off to the airport in the morning. Not expecting to have any convenient internet access on the trip
  4. Leaving tomorrow on a 9 day business trip to Germany. Factory tour already arranged (looking forward to more than any other part of the trip). Is there any "must buy" Boxster item I should look for that I can't get at home? Nothing kitschy, and there's nothing I can think of I need. But if there's something I can't order any other way, suggestions please...
  5. I asked this same question about my Boxster just the other week. Discussion is at Sidemarkers as turnsignals also. The bottom line is that, at least for Boxsters, the side markers don't blink, they only light up with the running lights. Unless you're outside the US and Canada, in which case they don't light up, but do blink with the turn signals. If you have wiring diagrams, you can probably figure out which connector pins make the sidemarker blink on rest-of-world cars. When I get lots of time, I'm going to look for a different bulb carrier (VW/Audi?) for the side marker that will light up with the running lights and blink with the turn signals. There's also a hack and subsequent link to technical discussion in my Boxster thread. If you find any useful info (e.g., if the Tourag does something different) please let me know, and maybe there's some other VW part I could wire in.
  6. Wow - very enlightening site! (Sorry, I couldn't resist) After reading this description, I wonder if there's a Porsche or VW/Audi bulb carrier that will take a 2 filament bulb I can use to replace the existing sidemarker bulb carrier. Then I would just need to add another wire, no cutting of wires, and would have the sidemarkers lighting match the front turn signal lighting. Something to start looking into when I have more free time If I can't find anything else, I'll probably find out what pin removal tool Jeff has and do the side marker hack as he described after the car is out of warranty. I've had so much stuff replaced by my dealer under warranty and they have been so good about everything, I don't want to do anything that could possibly mess that up until after the car is out of warranty. It's much easier to return the car to original by removing an additional wire than by un-cutting one that's been snipped If anybody finds another way to do the sidemarker / turnsignal with a different bulb holder, please post details here Thanks all for your valuable inputs and help - I've learned a lot more about how our cars are wired up than I knew before
  7. Here's the answer from the UK boxster board, which I assume applies to the ROW as well. Their side markers only operate as turn indicators and do not light up with the headlights, whereas US side markers normally light up with the headlights, but don't work as turn indicators. So without doing the wire cut and snip hack, you can't have it both ways. I'll wait until my warranty is up before I decide to start cutting wires. Gives me time to think up some other options
  8. Thanks TP! I got the wiring diagrams from a Boxster service manual I downloaded off the internet, and compared the US and ROW wiring diagrams. Also found the "ta da" instructions. In the 2001 wiring diagram, it looks like the only turn signal wiring difference is like the "ta da" directions said, and the side turn signal wiring in the US goes to pin 3 on the X1 and X2 connector, whereas it goes to pin 4 for the ROW wiring. But, I'm probably not much better at reading electrical diagrams than you are. Do you know if the sidemarker lights on ROW cars turn on when the headlights come on, or do the sidemarkers only go on when the turn signals flash? If they only go on with the blinkers, then I think the answer is I would need another light socket and bulb in the side marker to get side marker lights for both indicator and turning. Or I would need to do the alternating flash hack like Loren and Sandy described. If the ROW sidemarker lights up with the headlights and flashes with the turn signal, then it probably is as simple as moving pin 4 to 3 (and hoping the circuit doesn't have problems with the additional load - not likely a problem). Otherwise I'll wait until the car is out of warranty before making any obvious wiring changes Thanks again for all your help
  9. Yes - I saw Loren's post for the sidemarker flash hack, How to make your sidemarkers flash, in step with the turn signals, and that's not what I'm looking for. I saw something about just swapping pin 3 to pin 4 for the X1 and X2 headlight connectors. Will this cause the sidemarkers to still light up with the running lights, and blink with the turn signals (ROW setup)? Or will the sidemarkers only light up with the turn signals and not come on with the headlights? Is there any simple pin swap that will make the sidemarkers on/off equivalent to the front, or are there more light bulbs involved at the headlamp assembly than the side markers, which is why the alternating turn signal hack is required? For a 2001 2.7 - I'm not keen about cutting and splicing wire as the car still has the original Porsche warranty left, hence the question
  10. Talked with dealer service manager today. On Friday, I drove down to San Diego (approx 2 hrs - 125 miles) and on the way out my driveway, there were puffs of smoke out the rear. Service manager said don't worry, it's normal for these engines to smoke for the first 5 or so minutes after starting up, but keep watching it. And here I always thought these things only smoked on startup :o
  11. Recently, every time I start the car to drive, a lot of smoke comes out of the exhaust -- dark white/gray. I know about flat 6 engines smoking on startup, but in the last few months the amount of smoke has gone up considerably. Also, sometimes when pulling away from a stop I notice a puff of smoke behind me. I haven't seen any oil drops on the ground under the car in the garage ever. It's a 2001 2.7, 28K miles, full maintenance and the oil level shows correctly. In the maintenance records from before I bought the car, left and right side valve covers were both replaced 2 years ago around 11K miles because the car was smoking. Is this something I should be worried about, or just wait until the 30K service? The car drives OK otherwise
  12. Eureka!! After looking more closely, I saw the carpet is multiple pieces. Grabbing the upper right piece just closer to me than the footwell vent and pulling it came right off. Definitely helps when I pull the correct part - no wonder I had such a hard time trying to pull off the side of the center console! Once off, it looks just like your picture Thanks again for all your valuable info
  13. I've had this for my Boxster for about a year and a half. Good quality product and well made, materials have held up very well. The black matches the rest of the trim innards of the front trunk and looks to be of similar, although thicker, material to that used around the battery. I bought it mainly to keep from putting dimples in the trunk lids if overpacked. It's about a 10 minute install (no tools required) for someone with absolutely no mechanical skills The only problem I've heard with the product is it car wear away the paint around where the edge comes into contact with the paint. They might have fixed this since I bought. The last email address I have for them is DentWerks@aol.com, so you might want to ask Jim there if this is still a problem I would buy the product again
  14. Now I'm confused. I thought it was the vinyl side panel on the right side where the A/C controls, CD storage or trays go (underneath the dash). Any diagram available of just what I pull off to get to the wire?
  15. Does it just pull off, do I pry it off, or what? I tried pulling, but it seems pretty well connected, and I don't want to break anything! How hard do I pull, where do I pull, and how is it attached? "Rear of the cover" as in rear when facing forward or toward the rear of the car? Is this worth the effort just to stick a piece of tape on the connector for a 2001? Thanks
  16. Is there any trick to pulling off the cover to the right hand side of the center console? I'd like to check to see if the connector is taped up on my 2001. The dealer said to just push my finger into the fuel line several times until I hear it click, then I shouldn't have any problems filling all the way up. It would be nice to make sure nothing is shorting out
  17. I stopped by the dealer yesterday to get an opinion on my tires. 27+K miles on the original Continentals. Fronts were OK, right rear worn a bit, left rear worn a lot more, especially in the middle. The service manager said the left side gets power before the right side, hence more wear, and if I got that many miles I shouldn't mess with alignment. I usually check tire inflation every month or so, and keep at Porsche specs from the owner's manual I plan to get new rear tires in the near future. My questions are, is this true about power going to the left rear tire first, and is it OK to skip getting an alignment? The tire shop the dealer recommended doesn't have a Hunter machine for wheel balancing -- should I be worried?
  18. If I wasn't confused before, I certainly am now! If I understand this correctly, the base Boxster (which I have, a 2001) and the GT2 and GT3 have the same shifter, which is different than the Boxster S and Carrera. But the base Boxster doesn't have a short shifter, whereas some believe the GT2 and GT3 might. Has anyone who worked on a base and S Boxster and done the B&M short shift on each side by side noticed a before / after difference between the two? My car always seemed to shift fine, so now I'm wondering if it's the Boxster S drivers that notice an improvement (and need for one) more than us lowly base model drivers.
  19. On the funcars online web site there was an incomplete discussion of the GT2 / GT3 short shifter for regular 9x6 cars. Is there such a thing, how does it compare to the other short shifters everyone "must" have (i.e., B&M), will they work in a Boxster, has anyone done this, and are they available from a regular dealer? I actually think the original shifter in my Boxster is OK (possibly the only one who thinks so), but am curious...
  20. Earlier "speckle" finish? What's that? My dealer replaced the door storage pocked lids with leather ones, but I don't expect them to do it on every piece, and as pieces crap out after the warranty period, it could get expen$ive! Personally I'm not a big fan of the carbon look, and with a black interior, the matte black finish looks fine to me. It just looks bad when it flakes, bubbles and peels. Can a body shop match the "soft touch" finish? I was hoping there was a magic can I could use down the line to respray pieces I could take off myself Thanks for the suggestions
  21. I tried getting an answer from a few PCA tech forums, but no luck. Lots of the interior trim on my 2001 with the soft touch finish has peeled since I got the car. The dealer happily replaced parts under warranty. I'm afraid what's going to happen when the car is out of warranty. Is there a replacement spray on finish that matches the factory original? In recent discussion on PPBB, I asked the same question and got no response. And no, I don't use sunscreen anywhere. Nor do I use anything harsh to wipe down the inside or treat anything rough. Some of the parts look worse after a year than the inside of my 15+ year old Toyota pickup I abuse and use for hauling around all kinds of stuff.
  22. Thanks for the inputs. Given all the Boxster engine failure folklore and mythology, maybe I'm just a bit paranoid (of course, who's to complain if Porsche gives me a new engine). Next time it happens, I'll see if I can pinpoint it a bit better, and will have dealer check starter solenoid next time it's in for service (hopefully not 'til 30K service)
  23. engine is actually turning over (I think). extremely brief and right before releasing key for starter. and no, I'm not holding the starter for too long. the noise sounds extremely loud and mechanically nasty to be starter related (based on my limited knowledge of starter noise sounds)
  24. The other day when I started the car (2001 base Boxster), for a moment there was a horrible metallic, mechanical noise (extremely brief). Sounded like lots of metal parts coming together in ways they shouldn't at high force. Heard it once before several months earlier. Otherwise, car sounds fine and drives great. No oil drops in the garage seen yet. Is this something that occasionally happens, am I paranoid, or is it a harbinger of horrible engine happenings to come? It happened so quickly it's impossible to describe the sound more specifically
