  1. Jeff,

looking at two right now....a 2000S with almost a complete page of options on it, and a 2002S with a more minimalist approach...both with mileage under 60K and prices in the very low $20s

just tossing around the +s and -s of each...

both are lease return/one owner cars.

    with clean carfax reports. :D

  2. Thanks Loren and Jeff,

It belongs to a good friend of mine. He just bought it and wants only the temp read out.

I will let him know and see if he wants to remove the bumper cover and take a look for wires.

I don't know when the car was manufactured but it must be a fairly early '97 since the car has 117K miles on it.

With that kind of mileage there is a better than even chance that it may have had some body work on that right front fender area.

I will have him check your suggestions.

    Appreciate your prompt replies.

  3. On a '97 Boxster there is no standard temperature sensor for outside temps. Correct?

This being the case is the wiring for the probe behind the rubber plug in the back of the bumper?

If not how difficult is it to run the wiring and where does it need to go to?

Or is it just a matter of getting a temp. probe and plugging it into to wiring harness behind the

    bumper rubber grommet?

By the way I already have the computer turned on. It shows --F degrees but no temps.

    Thanks

  4. Also there is a place that sells a top w glass rear window that can fit into older Boxters w/ plastic window.

If you don't have the MY that is glass specific I would NOT retrofit a glass top. The way the mechanism retracts back into the trunk is just asking for trouble.

There is now a top that is being specifically designed for the older model Boxsters and it has a glass rear window that is the same size as the '03 and '04.

There was a very long thread on this site about the installation and how it fit and looks.

    Check with ToolPants.(jeff)

I believe it was a GAHH or something like that. :D

  5. Could someone either decode these for me or direct me to where I could find them. Tried the option decoder from Kimmel, but most don't register.

    C02, 198, 232, 249, 394, 432, 454, 490, 502, 535, 551, 584

These are from a 2003 Boxster Normal.

    Thanks in advance. :drive:

  6. Has this always been a problem?

There is a TSB for a Fuel Tank Hose Modification (dated 8-12-99) where:

    1. Difficulty filling the fuel tank can occur if the flexible fuel hoses in the fuel tank obstruct the inner flap of the fuel filler neck.

    2. Incorrect fuel gauge readings can also be caused by the flexible fuel hoses in the fuel tank, should they interfere with the travel of the fuel sending unit arm and/or float.

Has this mod been done to your car?

    Loren,

I have no idea since I bought the car used. This just started about a week ago. Until then never had a problem and gas guage has always been accurate. As far as I can tell the guage is still accurate.

How would I check to see if this has been corrected previously, other than checking with dealer. Do they affix a sticker somewhere when corrections are made.

Do you know what fuse on a '99 would be used instead of fuse E6?

    Thanks

  7. I paid $400 years ago for both.  Got it from local owner Chris Murray when he converted his S into a track car.  Since he has a 2000 it is the silver crest.  I got a good deal.  Funny thing is, no one wanted the silver crest back then, now they do.  I had given up on ebay because the prices got jacked up to over $600.

When my friend Dave turned in his leased car a few years ago he sold his 3 spoke to Harry Wong for $500.  I know them both so I said $500 was a fair price.  I took the wheel out of Dave's car and put it in Harry's.

There was a guy selling the pair on rennlist and I told Patrick Tam about it.  I told Patrick $500 was a good price.  Patrick bought it from the rennlist guy for that price and I put it in at the Sunnyvale tech session.

Harry and Patrick have the colored crest.  Both the wheel and air bag were perfect.

Then Madam No Fear got the pair for free, but you do not want to know how.

If you can get it for $500 then you got a deal.

    Thanks Jeff,

That is about the price I was thinking of. We will see what the owner has to say.

  8. :( I bought a bulb to install on the right side of the car to have 2 rear fog lights instead of one like it's standard. What was my surprise when I installed the bulb was to realize that there is no power ( electricity ) in the right socket for the rear fog light. How come I can't have 2 rear fog lights and what should I do to have a second rear fog light on the right side of my car ?

    Thanks for your infos. :)

You will need to run a wire from the left side to the right to get the power (hot) during rear fog switch activation. You should be able to get a ground on the right side. Check with a voltage meter or a test light to see which wire is hot and which is ground. someone here like tool pants can probably give you the color code.

Many folks have done it over the years. I have been contemplating doing it myself just to give myself something to do when I am bored and not at the track or AX. :drive:

  9. Hack is a 1-2 on a scale of 5. Takes ~30min if you use a dash switch. 45-60 min doing the four stalk.

I am sure you could get an independent to do it. It is only money...and since they are probably not up to speed on this hack it may cost you dearly$$$$

Hi All-  I am a mechanical klutz, really not very good with few tools.  I would love to have the OBC working, but am afraid I'd end up towing my car to a dealer once I messed up something serious. I've a 2000s.

My question:  How hard is this hack, and how much time does it take?

Also, have any of you heard of independant shops that might be able to do it instead?

    Thanks-

    Ric

  10. If they say Italy on the back side then they are definitely look alike knockoffs.

Sorry you ended up with these.

They are not going to be worth much unless you can find someone with an older 911 that likes the look of the newer wheels.

Any chance of going back and finding the guy you bought them from.

I paid $1200 for turbo looks with brand new Dunlop SSRs on them, but they were factory original.... those wheels that you have probably are worth somewhere in the $500-600 range...Maximum. Maybe less

Here's some photos.  Just says "Made in Italy" and what appears to be a date code for 1996..

I could not find a part number on the side.

This illustrates the dangers of going to the swap meet early in the morning when you are half-alseep.

    :( :( :drive:
  11. I bought some Porsche wheels at a swap meet this weekend in the LA area and got them home and they don't fit on my car (Boxster, MY97/17" wheels). :cursing:  They stick out beyond the fender by about 10mm (back wheels) so clearly the offset is wrong.  The wheels are 7.5x17" in the front and 9x17" in the rear.  They look very, very similar to the OEM Boxster wheels I have (twisty look) and looks similar to (or may be) the Cup3 type wheels.

The guy had them on a '86 Turbo and thought they came off a Boxster (I guess not).

It does not appear they would come from a 996. Are they wheels from a 993?  I would like to know so I can sell them to someone who can actually use them.  Needless to say, the wife is less than pleased that I managed turned $1200 in cash into a stack of unuseable wheels in garage. :help:

Thanks for the help of getting me out of the dog-house....

    Bonehead in LA

There are many aftermarket and even factory that look the same or similar but are very disimilar in fitment. These sound like an aftermarket set made specifically for the older car offsets in the rear. The front offsets on the older cars is closer to the front offsets of the newer cars.

If they fit a turbo 911 without spacers in the rear then there is no way they would fit your Box.

Check to see if you can find factory parts numbers. All of the more recent cars with

ABS have similar offsets. The older 911s have much more of the wheel outboard. The newer cars put more wheel inboard.

Sounds to me like you need to return to the swap meet as a seller next weekend? ;)

  12. That is the problem, there are no part numbers on any of the yellow wires.  If the wires have been mixed up then you need to know what the pins look like when you sort through.  They are shipped in a plastic bag with a part number on the bag, and if they are still in the bag then you have a better chance at getting the correct wires.  If they have been removed from the bag then they get mixed up with all the yellow wires in the bin.

Ask for George at the parts counter because I have shown him the difference - if he remembers.

Thanks again for your time and knowledge Jeff!

  13. Since Peter works for Stevens Creek and we have done lots of retrofits they usually have them in stock.  They use to be a VW dealer.

They have a bin with all kinds of yellow wires that look the same but do not work, so I sort through the bin to make sure I get the correct ones.

    Thanks Jeff,

I guess that if I go the SC and check in the parts dept. with the part number I should end up with the correct wire? VW Wire (#000.979.010)

Is there anyone in the parts dept. that knows about these wires and which ones work?

    Dan

  14. So, the VW wires are still available?

Any particular dealer where they have a better supply?

    Dan

They are made by AMP not Molex.  I went to Fry's many years ago and did not find anything that was exactly right.  Then Peter figured out what VW wires were an exact fit for an OBC retrofit.  Then we started using the VW wires because they already have the correct pins crimped on and they are only $2 per wire.

The wires are for a Golf recall from about 10 years ago and I have been afraid the source would dry up, so I tried to find the part number for just the pins.

The pins in the pic go into the OBC connector and into the instrument cluster on a 2001 up Boxster or a 2000 up 996.  I have not been able to find the pins that go into the cluster connector for a 1997-2000 Boxster/1999-2001 996 - but in reality you can get these pins in the pic into the connector and they work fine

I was thinking at one time of buying the pins and making a wiring harness, but it is so much easier with the VW wires.  And I am not good crimping a pin that small.

  15. Jeff,

What exactly are Molex connectors, what size are they, and can you get them anywhere except the VW dealer?

    Fry's, radioshack?

    Thanks

    Dan

We do it with the switch.  Some people even do it with 2 switches.  I would rather do it with the stalk because then it is like factory, but some owners want the switch.

It is simple.  There are 3 wires.  Ground, and the other 2 go to 21 and 25 in the white connector to the back of the instrument cluster, for your year.

There is no electricity in the wires.  By moving the switch back and forth you create a grounded circuit.

This is the wiring harness I make.  Most people use the footwell switch but you can use any Porsche dash switch you like.

If you can see the outside temp display then the trip computer is already turned on.
