  1. I am assuming you mean smoke, not oil comes out of the exhaust. First, what is the color of the smoke? White smoke: White smoke is caused by coolant entering the cylinder, and the engine trying to burn it with the fuel. The white smoke is steam. Blue Smoke: Blue smoke is caused by oil entering the cylinder area and being burned along with the fuel air mixture. Black Smoke: Black smoke is caused by fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Second what you describe sounds quite normal. Third, cooling the turbos should be a habit...regardless of how far or how hard you run them (if the engage at all). Realize they are cooled almost entirely by the oil that runs through them. The second you shut your car down...the oil flow stops. Look at the turbos after a short ride...now touch them...they are hot. Just let them cool 90-120 seconds, always (even when you stop for gas).

    Thanks for the info wross996TT. Sorry, you're correct, I meant a cloud of oil smoke. It is blue and there is a worryingly large amount of it when this (intermittently) happens.

    I'll cool my turbos from now on, although I'm surprised the Porsche dealer didn't mention this when I bought the car and also that the car doesn't have some kind of warning or prevention mechanism to stop you shutting it down as soon as you stop.

  2. When I restart my engine when its still warm, very occasionally a big cloud of oil comes out the exhausts. I haven't found a reliable way to reproduce this, and it only happens maybe twice a month. The car has 60k km (40k miles) on the clock and otherwise the engine seems healthy, with no adverse temp or pressure readings. Should this be expected, or am I likely to be getting a large bill soon?

    (I only recently found that I should be idling the car at shut down to cool the turbos, although I usually drive in city traffic at 20mph and the turbos rarely kick in.)

  3. I've tried OPC in Australia, all the breakers, aftermarket wing suppliers and general hardware stores and no-one seems to be able to supply these. Someone somewhere must know who stocks / makes them?

    (I can't reuse the screws from the original spoiler as I need to be able to interchange spoilers reasonably frequently without ripping the threads and spoiler to pieces because of the loctite.)

    First why are you going back and forth? My only suggestion is to get them custom machined at a machine shop. I don't know any where to get them.

    I don't want to leave the GT2 wing on for day to day driving, I just want to fit it for track days maybe once every 6 - 8 weeks. I'll hunt around for some machine shops, but it seems odd that no-one supplies readily these.

  4. I am starting to look for a 996 Turbo to replace my C2 Cab. I would welcome advice from current owners and any hints or tips.

    I really would like a Tiptronic as I have really liked the one I have now - but open to thoughts.

    I am in the UK and I have a budget of up to £50k for the right car.

    Any views?

    I upgraded from a '01 C2 Cab Tiptronic to a black 996TT Tiptronic last month, the difference is unbelievable. I can't recommend it enough. Much more power, get up and go from any speed. It turns more precisely and has less body roll. The car also seems to sit a fair bit lower, as when I wash it I can reach almost all the way across the roof, which wasn't possible with the cab.

    I would liken the performance gradient as changing from a 2.5 Boxster to a 996. When I went to test drive mine, I didn't want to give it back afterwards and had the thing in my garage within 2 days.

    On the track the Turbo has a lot more poise and really is much quicker, although I went through a set of tyres and pads in a day.

    In general driving I find mine can unexpectedly jerk away from standstill and occasionally at about 50% throttle the turbos suddenly kick in and the car squirrels off down the road.

    Its also very much easier to speed in the car, so set your speed warning chimes at 75mph. In Australia we have very low speed limits (8 lane highway in Sydney with a speed limit of 40mph) so I often find myself accidentally exceeding the limit by well over 50%.

    I have yet to pay a service bill, but the dealers estimated that it wouldn't be a lot more than servicing a 996 C4.

    I am looking at fitting GT2 exhausts and chip when I have completed some research on post-upgrade drivability.

  6. I have a carbon fibre GT2 wing that I'm fitting in place of the standard lifting Turbo wing, but I still need the Dzus mounting lugs that screw into the wing to attach it to the hydraulic rams.

    These are loctited into the wing, and I want to be able to interchange the standard and GT2 wings without ripping these lugs out the wing each time.

    What is the part number or where can they be ordered from please?

  7. I have a CF GT2 rear wing that I'd like to fit for trackdays, only problem is its missing the screw-in mounting lugs that attach it to the lifting rams in the rear wing. Where can these be ordered? My Porsche centre can only supply complete wings at $6k AUD and none of the Porsche breakers I spoke to have them.

    I don't want to remove the lugs from the standard wing as I want to interchange the wings and the lugs are loctited in place. It also seems likely that either the lugs or the wing will be damaged by removing the lugs as I used enough force to sheer the head off a 8mm bolt without the lug moving.

    I've also been offered a cheap GT2 exhaust system. The seller says it increased the power to 530bhp on his old 996TT when fitted with a chip, filter and mapping. Will this have any adverse side effects, eg reduced power at low revs or lumpy running?

  8. Thanks for all your input. I will check them out myself. The brake job doesnt seem hard at all.

    I just changed the front and rear pads on my 2001 Cab yesterday. I only needed to replace one of the sensors, which was a 2 min job with no tools needed. The sensor cost $30 Australian dollars. Pads were the same to change as on most disk brake cars.

    I don't think you are supposed to simply push the pistons back into the callipers though, as you could damage the master cylinder. I was advised to release the bleed nipple when pushing back the pistons to give the clearance for the new pads.

  9. I recently bought a 2001 pre-facelift Carrera Cabriolet. One of the standard H7 headlights and the front bumper is cracked. As I have to replace them anyway, I was thinking of facelifting the car to the post 2002 style with Xenon lights.

    I have found these headlights listed below:

    How much additional work would be required to install these, if indeed they will fit at all? From reading around, I think I also need to replace the front bumper, fenders (wings) and wiring loom at the front, but have no definitive answer. If someone points me in the right direction, I'll try to photograph and document the facelift procedure.

  10. It would be great if you could write a 'How To' guide on this, and post it on the 996 DIY Mods forum. I have a 2001 Carrera cabriolet with standard headlights that I would like to facelift to >2002 with Xenons. I guess you need to replace the following? :

    Both fenders

    Both headlights and ballasts

    Front bumper

    Headlight mounts?

    2002 wiring harness

    Anything else, eg bumper mountings?
