  1. Hi

The dealer has confirmed that this part (the bulb holder) is NOT available as a separate part, you have to buy the entire headlight assembly, which they kindly offered to me at a discounted price of $1,000!

Needless to say I declined the offer!

The bulb holder is available as a separate part for 2002 onward cars (costs about $36!) but is unfortunately not backward compatible.

  2. Hi

it sounds like you have accidentally broken the optical loop.

Have you cheked all the connections?

The optical loop needs to work just like that, a great big loop, think of it as a highway with only one way traffic that goes around in a circle.

I found the install instructions from dension excellent, I had mine up and running in about 30 minutes, with the BTA1500 bluetooth.

I did not have a cd changer though, so i didn't need to remove it from the loop.

I definately sounds like the loop is broken somewhere.

I also assume you are talking about the gateway 500? you didn't actually tell us.

    Cheers and good luck

  3. Thanks Loren, that was my understanding.

Roger, what problems, if any, did not disabling the PCM cause in your car, given there will be no screen to display errors on.

(It just may be a while before I can get to a shop with a PIWIS so if the problems are bad, i may hold off on the installation so i can make time to get the car in).

    Thanks!

  4. I fixed mine by cutting off the broken hose below the one-way valve down to just above the 90o bend. I used some 1/2 inch vaccum hose to slip over the remaining pipe and bend.

Then I clamped it with a hose clamp, and clamped the other end to the bottom of the one way valve and re-inserted the one-way valve into the top part of the pipe.

Total cost about $10 and 30 minutes time, plus the new hose is so thick it'll never crack again.

Error message went after two starts and a bit of a drive.

    Cheers!

  5. Removed the PCM, stock amp and CD Changer and replaced with a Kenwood Nav unit, Kenwood Mono Amp and 8" Kenwood sub in the cabriolet's bassbox. Huge improvement in the sound, looks, functionality. Thanks again for clarifying the PCM question for me.

    Hi

I am about to embark on the same thing on a 04 Turbo Cab

Is it necessary to "delete/disable" the PCM in the MOST ring using the Porsche system tester, or is it ok just to swap everything out and patch the optical ring where the PCM used to be.

    Thanks

  6. Hi

I wanted to know if anyone can comment on whether the oil filter insert is interchangeable with the 996 3.4 engines.

The parts guy at the dealership told me they were, although parts numbers are slightly different. 996-107-225-53 (955) vs 996-107-225-60 (996)

I've done plenty of oil changes in my cayenne, and bought bulk filters and seal rings.

As I said Parts at the dealer said no problem, but they have been wrong before.....

Just wanted to check before I dump the oil on my 996.

    Cheers

  7. Hi

I have to change the plugs on my 03 TT but no-one here stocks the multi-point bit (we call it Spline-Drive here).

I have the M10 used for removing the seat to change the battery, but the bolt on my stabiliser bar is larger.

It looks like a M11 or or possibly M12.

Can anyone tell me exactly which size it is as I have to order it sight-unseen and they do not allow returns for special ordered tools.

I have seen references to a T-55 but it is definately not a torx drive bolt.

    Thanks

  8. Hi Q8 Helper

Ok for soft sand you need tyres that you can let down to about 18psi to get some traction.

I use 18" wheels on my turbo currently running Maragioni Maxo's.

As for lift, I have air, so no problem there. You don;t need so much lift for sand if you can keep the momentum up.

It's when you get stuck you need lift.

Also do a google search for Maxtrax. They are great in sand.

Check my other posts for more sand driving tips.

I also only just watched that video. Man, that is a prime example of how NOT to drive in sand dunes, you NEVER EVER drive across a dune, only up and down (you'll roll as the soft sand downhill gives way, (believe me I've seen it happen) and you NEVER EVER go flying over the top of a sand dune like that, unless you have checked the other side, you can get wind cut outs that make sheer drops that will flip your car for sure and smash the front in, again I've seen that happen, NOT PRETTY especially when you're miles away from Medical attention....

  9. Hi

The rear window on my 99 cab finally let go last night separating almost all the way along the bottom seal. (I've only had the car back a week after a transmission rebuild :-( ).

I've put the hard top on (ugly) but the roof has got to come off to either be repaired or replaced.

I've searched the forum and seen lots of talk about it but has anyone done it themselves?

I have the factory workshop manual and have read the procedure several times.

It seems tricky, but not impossible, just a bit time consuming.

I also have the durametric software, the latest beta bersion claims to be able to do the top calibration.

So I was just after some feedback from anyone who has done it themselves and any tips they can offer.

I have been quoted around $600 for labour and about $400-$500 for a new window, but I am also considering the GAHH glass conversion depending on the cost of repair - although the top itself is in very good condition.

Also does anyone know if the roof mechanism can be folded down with the top removed, so I can still drive the car with the hard top on while it's getting repaired.

    Looking forward to your responses....

    Cheers

  10. Hi

My local auto shop has a special on Castrol Edge 5W-30 fully synthetic oil.

It's half price! normally costs a little more than the Mobil 1 5W-40 I normally use.

I'm looking for an opinion on this oil.

My main concern would be that 5W-30 would be a bit "thin" for the hot climate we have here.

The oil is marketed as being suitable for "high performance modern turbo charged engines" and "extreme temperature".

    Any opinions?

    Thanks

  11. I upgraded from a 97 Boxster to a 99 996 cab, several years back.

Do it, you'll never look back.

As Jeremy Clarkson says on Top Gear "The only reason you buy a Boxster is because you can't afford a 911!". I know that's why I did.

The back seats are a good size for little kids. My 6 year old son loves it!

The main difference you'll find apart from MUCH better straight line speed is the 911 is certainly not as forgiving in the bends as the Boxster.

You will learn to become good friends with copious amounts of understeer compared to your Boxster. But it's all part of the learning curve.

If you get a cabriolet (why wouldn't you!), fit a strut brace, even my wife noticed the difference....

    Best of luck

  12. I had a similar problem with my 968 which I beleive has the same 4 speed auto as your 993.

A bearing went releasing metal shards into the oil which destroyed the hydraulic pump and required a transmission rebuild.

It was catagorised by "flaring" shifts.

My 996 also required a rebuild for flaring shifts. Unfortunately as I have learnt, there is no simple repair for auto transmissions, a full rebuild is the only option.

I'm currently 2 to 2 on rebuilding automatic transmissions with Porsches, ZF make crap transmissions.

    My Condolances.

  13. Have you guys seen this...

NAV-TV releases world’s first replacement head unit module for the Porsche Cayenne

    http://dupontregistry.wordpress.com/2009/0...orsche-cayenne/

Interestingly it doesn't appear on their website at all...

I already have a gateway 500 in my 03 TT, but I'd definately go this route for my next Cayenne and 997.

    Hope this is of interest...

    Cheers
