  1. Thanks for the pics. What is the orange thing? Seems I am always a step behind. I ordered a jack on ebay with the foam holder. Guess what. It doesn't fit.
  2. So last day of vacation today. Got the new air filter in the mail and went out to change it. Car ran fine, but idled a little funny. I had no concerns. Then when I removed the at filter I found this: Car runs better and sounds a lot better. Then cleaning out the drains in the front and removed the battery and found this: It is behind the battery. Is it supposed to connect to anything.
  3. That's kind of what it sounds like. Had that problem with my tractor. Was terrified I was going to see IMS. Cost? Loren, if you are ever in Akron I owe you dinner.
  4. There is a 1 second grinding noise when I start the car. Is it time to be worried.
  5. Was trying to recondition my wheels and noticed a cut in the sidewall of the tire near the rim. Not too deep, but I decided to make sure I have everything I need in case of a flat. My car came with a compact inflatable spare and a tool kit missing some tools. I am trying to collect everything. I need a compressor and the 5mm headlight tool and the screw driver. I bought the jack. Now to the questions. How are they stored? Anyone got a pic? Are the tools from the 997 kit that comes in the plastic a screwdriver and headlight tool? If so I can complete my kit for cheap. Is the stuff in the brown plastic bottle I keep seeing on ebay in some 997 kits Porsche "fix a flat"? Did it come with the 996? Can I get one of the audi/vw compressors that hooks to the battery instead of the lighter? Meaning is there a special valve on the spare that needs a Porsche compressor or can I get anyone?
  6. So, my DIY woes continue, but today I actually fixed something. When I was at the dealer yesterday they noticed that the right front brake lines into the caliper were loose because there was brake fluid on the caliper. They said it had been going on a while because some of the paint on the caliper was starting to peel up. They tightened them for me and recommended a brake fluid change because the brake fluid was dirty. One of the few things that I am skilled at is brakes. The first time the dealer wanted $800 to do the rotors and pads on my 1998 grans prix I quickly learned how to do it myself. I don't usually change the entire fluid out except on my BMW as recommended because when I change the brakes and rotors I always remove some fluid from the reservoir and bleed the lines. I have never seen air in a brake line in my life. The way I do it is I attach a hose to the bleeder valve and use a family member to pump the brakes as I open and close it. So fast forward to the 996. When I got it, it stopped well, but not as well as my BMW. When I got it the brake fluid was low and I topped it up wondering why it was low. After the trip to the dealer I figured out why it was low and did not worry. Today I changed the brake fluid. On the right side I saw an air bubble go through the hose during the bleeding process. It did not surprise me too much because if the line was loose on that side I figured air could get back in. But...when I did the left side I also saw an air bubble come through the tube. After I was done I tested the brakes. It now stops as well as the BMW. It amazed me, one little air bubble in each side makes a difference. Now for the question. Where did the air come from. Is my theory right that if there is a leak on the right caliper a little air could get in? Can that air get from the right side to the left? As an aside, did you know you can not lay the tires flat on the concrete to clean them or you will scratch them? I found this out the hard way. Next project, DIY wheel refinishing.
  7. Problem fixed. Shout out to North Olmsted Porsche. Got me is same day and fixed the roof for $250. Then inspected the car and fixed the washer, brake fluid leak, and hood for almost nothing.
  8. So I am at the dealer. Good news is they said its a brand new roof. Bad news is that they say the car is confused. It is way out if sync and they have to call porsche to fix it. Good news is that I am sitting in a room of new Porsches. Bad news is that the 2013 4s cabrio I want is $172,000. Maybe next car. How much do you think I can get for a kidney? But when I look at my car in the service bay it is a thing of beauty. Paint shines and I am far enough I can't see any dents or scratches. Also I called my wife to complain that I did this to myself. She said don't worry, this is not a big deal, and if I am going to mess with the car then this is the cost I have to pay. In the scheme of things this does not even count. So I have the greatest wife ever. She bought me the car and doesn't care if I break it. Our 20 year wedding anniversary is next month. I should probably get her more than a card. Sorry for the rambling, but just bored at the dealership.
  9. So my speedometer is off by 5 mph. If a buy a durametric thing can I use it to recalibrate the speedo?
  10. 2 questions: 1. The clam shell will not move so the top will not go up and down. It will if I open the shell manually, the use the button in the car to open or close the roof, then I close the shell manually. All I need is a recalibration? 2. I see durametric at $800 on their website and $297 at amazon. Is the one from amazon all I need? Ok and answer me honestly. Would I do more damage with a code scanner?
  11. OK. I need some Xanax. Let me explain what happened. I was putting gummi pfledge on the seals and had my daughter open the roof half way, the trunk, and the hood. While I was sealing the roof and the front trunk she was "driving the car". when I finished I asked her to close the roof an nothing. Came in and did a quick search and was not able to find much. Went back out and started taking things apart. Found a way to move the clam shell. and found a way to lower the roof. did this a bunch and still no luck. Came back in and did a search and found that the trunk must be closed. Did this and now things started to work, but the clamshell is out of sync. Is there a way to resync? I have read a few posts on this and nothing was clear. So now I have a problem I created myself
  12. Is there any way to manually open or close? I tried to search but no luck. I will keep trying. In the mean time any ideas? I stopped the top half way up to clean the seals and now when I try to move it light flashes. I got out the tool to manually close it but only the clamshell moves unless I want to use a lot of force.
  13. You guys have been a huge help. Got stuck in a rain storm this afternoon so decided to try to clean drains. In process of doing the back. In the front I looked at the pic but can find anything. Can some one help and point out the drain? front drivers side passenger side
  14. Just an update 1 - heated seats - read the post, thanks for the info. Will get to it 2 - not tackled yet 3 - leaking roof. I took the seats out and dries the carpet. Passenger side was dry. Driver side, though, was wet under the driver's seat also. I looked at the seals around the rear quarter window and there was a big hole. I replaced these today and the car got significantly quieter with the top up. Now that I see they are supposed to be "furry" I am going to replace the other side also. Where are the drains to clean? Where else can I check for the front driver side getting wet? I think I am going to get good at taking out the seats. 4 - yep, the problem was the cable. I ordered a new one. 5 - thanks Now another couple questions: 6 - Engine idles "rough". It seems to surge a little at idle but only a few rpm's. Is this normal? Does a flat six idle a little rough compared to the BMW straight six? Porsche dealer can't get me in for a couple weeks. 7 - Speedometer us 5mph fast. This is compared to GPS on my phone. Is there a way to calibrate it? Oh, and as an aside, I taught (am teaching) my son to drive a stick. And lastly, this is something I never expected, but do people treat you guys differently for driving a 911? I have been cut off and tail gaited more times in the last week than in my entire life.
  15. I need a little help. I got the seat out, except at the top where it was glued in it is still stuck in the track. Any ideas how to get the rest of the rubber out?
  16. Wow. Thanks guys. I think I got my work cut out. I thought this was the hardtop latch cover Is there more than 1 latch?
  17. Hello all. I know this is supposed to be a "technical forum" with specific questions and answers, but I was hoping this would be a good place to chronicle my repairs and problems as I go and I will ask questions as I go and would welcome answers/input/comments. If this is the wrong place for a post like this let me know. I have a thick skin, so no hard feelings. This first post may be a little long, sorry. First lets go to how all of this started. I have more kids than I really need, and they are all starting to drive. When the first one turned 16 I gave her my 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix and bought a CPO 2008 535xi. This fall she is taking it to college this fall and we needed another car for my son. The BMW now has 110K on it and is almost worthless on a trade or sale so I thought I would give it to my son and get a new car. I set a budget of $30,000 and made the requirements that the car have 4 seats and AWD for my steep driveway and winters here in Ohio. So I thought a 911 AWD would fit the bill perfectly. I spent months searching the internet looking for the perfect car and my wife go annoyed that I was always on the net searching, knowing I would never pull the trigger. This is what showed up at my work for a fathers day gift She pain $22,995 plus and another $3000 in shipping, taxes, and dealer made up charges. Got to love used car salesmen. He told her the car was mint and needed nothing. It showed up at work with the usual dents and scratches and 2 quarts low on oil. That was a week ago. Here's the good. Engine and transmission seem perfect, though either I am weakling or out of shape, or the clutch is really stiff. After 1 week and 400 miles, here's my list of problems to repair, so any advice would be appreciated. I will try to keep this list updated as I go. 1 - Passenger heated seat worked one time, heated the seat and had the nifty red or yellow light go on. Now. Nada. 2 - Windshield washer fluid does not work. I tried to use it, the low warning light came on, I refilled the bottle, and no joy. 3 - Took my son to see Superman and came out in a torrential rain. Checked the back seats when I got home. A little water on the passenger side and a bucket on the driver's side. Now the carpets and semi pulled up and I am still trying to dry the rubber on the back. The seal around the rear quarter windows are shot, so I ordered some. Anything else to check? 4 - Passenger power seat works except the rear bottom won't raise or lower. Front goes fine. 5 - still not sure what this is Any thoughts would be appreciated, and I will probably keep posting my trials and tribulations as I go as long as no one here minds.
  18. Akron is good. Weather still sucks. I trained about a decade behind you at AGMC. From the replies I am going with good clutch and bad driver
  19. Had my 996 for a week. Has 36K miles. 6 speed. Got the radio working finally (shout out to Loren for the code). When I get out of the car I smeel the burning clutch smell. Until my last new car 3 years ago I always had manual transmission and never noticed this smell unless I was teaching someone to drive. So do I need a new clutch or do I just suck at driving a porsche? Greg
  20. Loren, I really appreciate this service. The numbers I got from the CR 220 in my 1999 911 4462 W5011150 48/98 Is that what you need? Greg
