Upgrade to Bose rear subwoofer

The bose subwoofer deck does use funny impedence speakers. However with a bit of rewiring they can be made to work with an aftermarket amp. You best bet is to add an amplifier for them. Take an audio signal off of the door speaker outputs from the radio and feed that either to the high level inputs of the amp, or if it doesn't have them, thru an rca converter. I am pretty sure it is a pair of 5 ohm speakers back there (but I could be wrong, so check) and that can be wired in parrallel to be a 2.5 ohm load at the amp. Most all amplifiers these days are stable down to 2 ohm, so 2.5 will be fine. Mount the amp somewhere, set the crossover to low pass, and you are in business. I do speak from experience, I removed the stock headunit and cd changer from my 2003 986S with Bose, and put a kenwood head unit in (and an iPad mini) I ran the dash and doors off of the kenwood and replaced the factory amplifier with a little 200 watt Kicker amp (about $80 new on eBay) and it sounds as good now as it did stock. People get their panties in a twist about ohm loads all the time, the simple rule is that most everything is stable to 2 ohm, EVERYTHING is stable at 4, and as the ohm load rises the output drops. You can really hurt anything either as again most everything has overheat and protection circuitry built in these days.
