  1. Well I have an answer....... I ordered a set of 4 triple squares from Sears (Schwaben....very nice by the way) to see if maybe the bolts were 14mm instead of the 16mm. The answer is.....nope. They are 16mm. The Kommen 16mm triple square socket (part number KM117-A) that I got from EBAY was either not manufactured correctly or was some cheap chinese knock off. The Schwaben 16mm fit perfectly. When I had the bolts out I tried to fit the Kommen and it was a no good. It was just too big. On a side note I can say that those rear brakes are a pain. Not impossible but certainly not as easy as most.
  2. I just did this repair on my 2008 Cayenne base. It was right at the 60k mark when the rubber material in the bearing let loose. I found that scraping some of the rubber off the bearing then hitting it with the scrotch bright on the grinder, then back to the razor blade and back to the scotch bright got the bearing perfectly clean in short order. Getting the little seals out was easy, as was re-packing the bearing. And I agree...it does take what seems like alot of grease. Take your time and make sure the seals are pressed back in all the way around. The rubber flex disc was a little more difficult. The disc has steel inserts on all 6 holes. 3 of the inserts stick out of the disc a little on one side and 3 stick out a little on the other side. Obviously these insert into the driveshaft or the output flange. They are also stuck in there pretty good. It took a while to wiggle them out of their holes. Some WD40 would have probably helped in hindsight. The bolts were also a different size in the Vortex kit. I think the stock ones were 18mm and I believe the ones I got were 19mm. I know I was a little upset that I had to drag myself out from under the car to get two new wrenches. I have several hundred miles on the repair and it seems just great. I know its not alot yet so I cannot attest to the longevity of the part, but it is pretty easy to do.
  3. The first time I tried it I had the wheel off and was ducking into the wheel well trying to fit the tool into the bolt. I could see the bolt, just not the center of it. I ran out of time and had to put everything back together. The other day I actually slid under the car so I was staring straight at the face of the bolts. They are definitely triple square. The tool I have (listed above) is big enough to cover the hole in the bolt. I should be getting a kit of 4 triple squares (10mm, 12mm, 14mm & 16mm) on wednesday and will see if my original tool is maybe mis-marked or if the openings are really smaller than 16mm. If I had to guess, and without having a 16mm or a 14mm in front of me, and assuming that my tool that I have is actually a 16mm, then I would not be surprised if they are 14mm
  4. Well I finally picked up a T50 torx bit to get those pesky rotors off up front. After I did the fronts, and since I was already filthy I decided to slide under the car to get a good look at the rear caliper bolts. The tool I purchased (listed above) is too big. Plain and simple its not right. Now according to the number written on the tool it is a 16mm triple square. So now I guess we have two possibilities.... 1. The tool is mis-marked 2. My 2008 Cayenne base has rear caliper bolts that are triple square but are smaller than they are supposed to be. Looks like a triple square kit is in order.
  5. It doesn't look like the brakes were ever apart. It has about 50k on the clock and my sensor went off indicating replacement. This is what I bought: http://www.kommentools.com/products/transmission-drain-plug-socket-audi-a3-a4-a6-vw-golf-tri-square-16mm There was no way it was fitting in. At least it didn't seem that way. It seemed way to big. I would place it on the bolt and turned it slowly to see if it would catch but it didn't want to drop in.

Before I tackled this job on my 2008 Cayenne base I read and read to make sure I had everything, however I have hit a bump in the road....my rear caliper bolts do not seem to be 16mm triple square. I purchased a Kommen 16mm triple square socket (part number KM117-A) and it is too big. My question is: Was there another size used in 2008? Maybe just on the V6 models? Anyone know what it is? Thank you.
