  1. You don't HAVE TO remove the mufflers. But, as I said for the 30 minutes it takes to remove the rear valance and the mufflers, it's totally worth it for the access. You don't have to remove the plugs but my car has 55K on the clock and it was time to replace them. Parts from pelican were about $130 including plugs ($65). You do need to lube up the o-rings to help them seal nicely. Hope this helps.

I see you have the PSE mufflers...or are those the MKII muffler modification? I have a new set of the MKII mufflers to install on my 99. Would you say that the fender is easy enough to get off that it would facilitate a muffler install by taking off the fenders like you did? Is there a DIY for fender removal? I have never had the bumper or fenders off and don't know where all the nuts and bolts are.

  2. I've just done a complete search on Renntech looking for a method to fix the latch on the fuel filler door on US Boxsters (I think this is similar to other Porsche models also). I found at least 10 other posts on this subject. In all cases, the same statement appears. Remove the right front tire and wheel liner. But I have not seen anyone say how to remove the evaporator (which must be removed to get to the latch).

I see that a couple of people state that the dealer fixed this for them. Did anyone see the dealer remove the evaporator? Is there a service manual I can buy that includes removing the evaporator? Do you really need to remove the entire fender to get at this?

My latch actuates perfectly, it is just loose in its bracket and I need to tighten the bolt that holds it in place so the plunger comes thru the hole in the fuel door.

I know this isn't necessary for the car to perform correctly, but I get bothered when I know something is off on my Porsche. :cursing:

    Thanks in advance.

I am interested in a response to this question also. I broke the plastic shaft that moves forward to lock the fuel door and need to install a new one. The car now gives a slight "beep" when I lock it becuse that shaft doesn't move forward and the car registers that as something left open. That plastic shaft isn't very strong....I was surprised that it was as flimsey as it was. Obviously it's there as a minor deterrant because a person could easily pry that fuel door open and break that shaft. I wonder if the alarm activates if the fuel filler door is opened when the car is locked???

  3. I'd like to know that too. I broke off the plastic shaft that comes forward to lock the fuel filler door when you activate the remote lock. I can't see any way to get in there without taking off the fender...and because the shaft doesn't move forward to lock, the car now gives that little warning beep upon activating the remote to let you know something isn't closed properly.

I can't find any reference to fixing this problem

  4. Hey folks...need some help pretty quick here. I have a 99 996 with the mechanical cable release for the trunk. Bought groceries last nite for the Super Bowl. Got home and the cable to the latch broke. Tried to access it thru the driver's side wheel well to pull on the cable and see if it would open the latch, and I found the cable but...the whole cable came out...so it broke off at the latch.

I've got all sorts of perishable groceries for the Super Bowl in the trunk and can't figure out how to get to the latch release. I tried looking thru the sidelight on the passenger's side...looking for some sort of cable release....can't see one in there. I found a small black ring in the front of the passenger's door frame and pulled on it...and broke the emergency release for the gas cover...so DONT pull on that ring very hard...it doesn't open the hood....now I have to fix that dogone thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated....hopefull before the milk sours and meat goes bad. All the dealership fix-it shops are closed...If you can open it, you can have all the goodies!! :)

  5. My thanks to Loren and the good folks who contribute to the DIY's on this forum. Using the pictures and text, I tackled my first DIY on my 99 996 and successfully removed/reinstalled a new coolant tank. The instructions were right on point...the pictures were a big help, and the completed project has given me a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Now that the first DIY is out of the way, I'm ready for some more complex tasks. Thanks again Loren.

  6. I'm running Schnell headers and mufflers in my 99 996. They were very easy to install and I have been very pleased with them. The mufflers are not very loud, but they have gotten a bit louder over time. Schnell was the only manufacturer who offered me a money back guarantee if I wasn't satisfied. The mufflers have absolutely no resonation, and the price was cheaper than most of the other manufacturers. Overall, I have been very satisfied.

Who is a good retailer of Schnell products?

    Thanks.

I just did a Google search for Schnell and was directed to a number of companies who carried the line....but then I ended up going through SharkWerks in the SF Bay Area and he ordered them, had them on hand when I came in, and Alex and James did the installs along with the GIAC flash and EVOM intake. I've been pleased with the Schnells....mostly because they're not obnoxiously loud, but they are loud enough to get some feedback when you go thru a tunnel or enclosed area. I might add that the fitment of the Schnells was outstanding...and James at SharkWerks said they were very easy to install.....if I had it to do over, I probably would do my own install.

  7. Sorry for cross-posting, but here goes:

I wonder if someone in the US sells the coolant tanks for such a human price?

Any pointer appreciated. I got a '98 Box.

Please do not cross post (see the Board Rules/Guidelines).

Get a quote from Porsche Parts at Dealer Cost (Sunset Imports). I think you will find they have the best price.

I just ordered and received an expansion tank from them for my MY 99 996 and it came to $168 plus shipping. That was the best price I was able to find after some rather extensive searching. Talk to Jeff Clark there...he's a really helpful and professional member of their parts department.

  9. DON NOT BUY the Becker CDR 230...or what you indicated is the CR 23. Although this radio is an upgrade...the '99 doesn't have the fiber optic wiring necessary for the installation of this radio. I did the same thing...wanna' buy my CDR 230? I ended up going to the online "pros" instead of screwing around on eBay and getting one that didn't work right...or like the one that the guy said would work and it didn't, and he wouldn't take it back. Do your homework before you jump out there and buy a radio. The good upgrade if you want to stay with the Porsche OEM in the CD version is the CDR 220..NOT the 230!! Chuck
