Intermediate Shaft Failure, New motor from Porsche..

I posted earlier about a noise coming from my engine or transmission. Just got off the phone with the dealer. I was told that Porsche just gave them authorization to give me a new motor. My car is an '03 996 Cab, Tiptronic. I just purchased the car from a dealer in Tenn. 2 month's ago. What do they mean when they say an new motor. They told me at will be an '06 motor.

Don't forget to properly break-in this new motor. Keep the RPM's below 4,200 for the first 2,000 miles, don't lug the engine, and vary your speed and RPM's during long driving periods. Long drives would be preferred. Good luck.

I would also suggest an oil change at the 1,000 mile mark.

Congrats. You get the latest version of the engine with all of the updates and improvements plus a new two year warranty on the new motor. Sounds like a great deal for you.

And do what white987 suggested and break the new motor in carefully.

As I understand it, the factory updated things along the way that they found to be problematic. I think Loren or Toolpants can provide a detailed list of the changes made through the years but I understand them to include bearing changes, changes to the intermediate shaft (a known problem in older cars) and other things Porsche identified in the intervening years. Nothing performance oriented but more service/durability issues.

My 2003 C2 (built 2/03) had the same problem at 23,000 miles and was replaced under warranty with a remanufactured engine.

If Porsche picked up the bill, you will not get the 2-year warranty. If you or a third-party warranty company pays for the bill, you will get the 2 years; this was according to my service adviser.

Mine was replaced last month and the engine appears to have all external parts built in May and June of 2006. I anticipate yours will be built around the same time which is good. You will have all of the updates and lots of new external parts.

Had this occurred outside of warranty, it would have costed about $13,000.

According to my service adviser, you only get the remaining balance of your new car warranty since Porsche paid for this reman. engine. In my case, Porsche paid for the engine so I did not get the 2 year warranty on it. When I purchased the car new, I did buy an extended warranty so if it happens again within the next 3 years, the third-party company will pay for it and I will get the 2-year warranty.

Since you bought yours used, did you get it certified? If not, you might want to consider a good 3-party warranty company.
