Instrument cluster backlight problem

Recommended Posts

Part #1 of "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". . .

Have a '99 986 and had the standard "the backlighting on my odometer went out" problem, removed the instrument cluster with the greatest of ease to examine the bulbs (thanks to this forum), and found that maybe the odometer bulb was missing? Can't tell. There were a couple spaces that look like bulbs would go in there, but no bulbs in there. There were a couple for the smaller, black-backed bulbs (the 1.2 watt ones?). Did the switcheroo with some bulbs that I knew were working, but to no avail. Replaced the switched bulbs to their rightful homes, I thought. You probably know where this is going. . .

Replaced cluster, now have no digital lights speedometer, odometer, nothing, though the big gauge lights seem to be working. Numbers refelct OK in sunlight, can see that it's working, just not lit.

Any ideas? Anybody got a nice diagram that shows which lights do what, so I could test.

Part #s on bulbs so I can get some?

Thanks as always!
