550 has 987 intake

Recommended Posts

Hello

While reading through lots of posts I read something about the 550 986 having the 987 intake.

If there much difference between these - normal 986 S / 550 version?

Is this why the 550 has 266 bhp compared to 'just' 260 on the normal 986 S?

Thanks....

I have not seen anything published by Porsche as to how the special edition has a few more hp than a standard 2004 S. I have always suspected it is because the intake on the special edition uses 987 parts.

While I have seen several special editions, I have never seen the inside of the engine compartment. When it came out I asked some of the mechanics, but they did not know since the car was so new that they had not worked on one. I'll have to check around to see if they now know.

In the meantime. Greig from Glasgow has a special edition. This is his board. http://www.porschaforum.com/forum/index.php He said when the weather is better he will take the engine lid off and take some pictures to confirm my suspicion.

i have a 550 SE, and the intake and air filter are definetely from a 987S

the tubing and the snorkel (i think) are different too

there may be some ECU differences, but the only other difference in the driveline is the exhaust tips

so youwould have to assume that the 6 HP difference is from the intake

I can see that the air filter is different and is a 987 part but there are no other parts on the intake using 987 parts or am I wrong?

Seems like the 550 filter should fit a normal 986 boxster or 986 S

the 550 SE has the cylindrical, 987/S type filter

the 986/S have a flat, trapezoidal shaped filter (or was that a rhombus?)

OK interesting

I'm having difficulty visualising. I guess drawings would be better. I'll try and find some.

If anyone can suggest any that would be great.

i can send you pictures

oh, wait, i see an atttachment system

i am quite busy at the moment (lecture early tomorrow to 4th graders about drug abuse)

but i promise to post them in the next few days

I just looked again in hte part catalog, it seems to be true that the 550 has the987 filter, but they don't list the 987 airbox for the 550, I guess they forgot it, because you can't fit a 987 filer in 986 airbox!

So the best way to find ou is a real picture I guess

I'm interested too, I think it should fit my non s

6 bhp is not an amazing amount I agree however for me it is part of a broader question of how the 987 3.2 has 280 bhp with the same engine.

I believe the 987 has 'an improved intake and exhaust system' to achieve this.

The 986 PET from last August, update 203, lists three air cleaner intake parts that are 550SE-specific:

987 110 021 00 air cleaner $422.89 US MSRP

987 110 133 00 air cleaner cartridge (filter) $40.62 US MSRP

999 919 160 07 oval-head screw (4 required) $1.48 US MSRP each

When you are looking at PET, note that "M091" in the far right column denotes the 550SE.

OK so today I went along to the local Porsche breakers and had a look at a 987 airbox. It looked very big. I'm not even sure how you would start removing it via the service hatch without removing the engine / intake manifold etc.

The snorkel did look a lot larger. It’s not round but more oval shaped. So it’s probably as wide as the 986 snorkel at it thinnest point and then twice as wide at its thickest.

The guy at the parts place said he doesn’t think it would fit as the MAF from the 986 would not fit.

So I guess the question is how is the standard 986 airbox removed and has anyone removed a 987 airbox?
