Speaker upgrade, MOST

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Please forgive me if this has already been discussed - I searched this forum but couldn't find any topic about it...

I've been searching for ages after a "direct replacement" or "drop in" to the standard speaker system. My 2003 Carrera 4 is equipped with the PCM2 and thus has the MOST. I know that I read somewhere in one of the many Porsche magazines about the Morel Integra Ovation 4 speakers, but unfortunately I can't find the article again :(

Has anyone of you any experience or knowledge about these speakers? Perhaps there's other options I'm not aware of

Kind regards,

Karl

Karl,

My name is James and I am the National Sales Manager for Morel America, I can answer any questions you might have regarding our products and fitment. We have many highly qualified dealer across the country that specialize in high-end vehicles so if your looking for an install shop I can help with that.

The Integra Ovation 4 is slightly bigger then the opening in the upper dash so it does require some trimming behind the grill, this ismainly because the diameter of the speaker is slightly larger then the OEM.

Here to help,

James

Hello James,

Thank you for your replay :)

I spoke with my local installer and he said that he had a remembrance of a "special" Morel kit that were developed for the Porsche 996 by Morel in Germany. I guess this is the kit that I've read about in one of the Porsche specialist magazines. Do you know if this is true or not?

I thank you for the offer about contact with a installer, but as I live in Sweden it might be a bit out of your reach :P Any help and clues about the actual install is more than welcomed though. I'd really like to get this done as I'm a bit of a "audiophile" and really suffer from the sound of the stock speaker system...

In the next coming days I'll get the Dension ICE>Link 500 installed and I plan to make the speaker upgrade soon thereafter.

Kind regards,

Karl

Karl,

Did you find someone selling the Morel speaker kit? As I too live in Sweden I'm kind of interested.. The stock speakers just doesn't sound that great, but I'm on the other hand not interested in having to modify the interior too much.

Thanks

Anders

Karl,

I am not aware of any specific kit designed for the 996 in Germany, our products are the sold in 55 countries around the world and are consistant from country to country. I will check with the factory to see if anyone their is aware of anything.

Most of the guys I have spoken with use our Hybrid Ovation 4 that uses a factory style clips to mount into the dash opening. This install only requires very minimal trimming of the opening, nothing cosmetic.

Anders/Karl,

I am also investigating replacing the BOSE speakers in my -04 Targa and live in Gothenburg. So far I have found a sub that looks like it could be used in the 6-lite enclosure in the passenger footwell: JLaudio 6W0, sold by www.nardik.se and www.braljudibil.se.

Really, I would like to find room somewhere for a small 15litre sub with maybe a Boston Acoustics Pro 8" or JLAudio 8W7-3 driven by an extra amp.

I haven't taken the standard speakers out yet, but I fear that it will be all paper cones. Bose are infamous for using small paper midrange drivers for bass duties (sometimes in bandpass boxes...) and 1" and 2" paper cones instead of real tweeters...

Does anyone know the respective DIN outputs for the 7 channels in the BOSE amplifiers? (I only know it's supposed to total 125W) Frequency range for each channel/driver?

In my car, according to BOSE own documentation, we are looking at the following set of drivers:

4 x 2,5cm/1" drivers

4 x 8cm/3" drivers

2 x 11,5cm/4,5" drivers

one 10,2x15,3cm/4x6" driver

So, we have one midrange driver, two high midrange drivers and eight drivers for highs, but no real tweeters...

This is a very weird setup and it's a miracle that it actually sounds as good as it does!

A more reasnoble setup would be two tweeters, two 6,5" midrange drivers, two 8" mid-bass drivers and one 12" subwoofer... strange...

I sent a e-mail to the Morel HQ in Israel a few weeks ago when I started to look for the speaker kit. Didn't receive any answer and hence my post in this forum. Judge my surprise and happiness as I've got the following message in my e-mail inbox today:

Dear Karl,

Sorry for the delay.

I have the perfect solution for you. Our British distributor sells a perfect kit for the 996 that includes adapter brackets and Morel's Integra 4" speaker as a kit. I will forward him your email.

Please let me know if you will need any further assistance.

Again, i deeply sorry for my tardy response.

OK folks, I received a e-mail from John at Auto Audio Installations in the UK. Here's a excerpt from it:

Please find prices listed below as requested.

Morel Dotech 4 4” Mid & Tweeter and crossover designed for Porsche 996 £407.52

Morel Integra Ovation 4 with crossover £278.69

Special fitting plates for Morel designed by us, for Porsche 996 £55.00

We carry out installations for the three official Porsche outlets in London therefore we know your car very well. Morel speaker are outstanding and respond favorably to amplification, for best results.

We can forward the speakers to you via Cargo Gateway Courier Service. Cost will depend on what you order.

Prices subject to VAT @ 17.5%

So, the question I'm facing now is what type of speaker to use ... Dotech  Integra ... does any one of you have any experience, which one has the "best" sound? Please notice that I'm more of a "studio recordings" type of listener than a "basement club" junkie...

Kind regards,

Karl

I bought a couple of Focal 100v2 and removed the door trim to install them. I saw that fitting it would be no problem, but it also looked like there would be room for a slightly bigger speaker... thinking that that the car has 11 speakers, and most of them very small, there should be no midrange feed to the door speakers, so I figured it would be best to fit as large a driver as possible, provoding it has a high efficiency.

I went back to the shop and got a Focal 130V2 kit instead, and with a little knife-trimming of the plastic around the opening they fit just fine. Since they are brand new, they have not been properly broken in yet, but the difference in midbass is already dramatic.

Next step is building a replacement for the BOSE-subwoofer enclosure for a JLAudio 6w0. I have bought a used amp (Rockford Fosgate 3001), a high-level to low-level signal adapter, ordered a JLAudio 6w0 and carpet that matches my interior (I amanged to find an almost exakt match at a regular carpet dealer, but they didn't have it in stock, they only had a small sample in a catalogue). (If you are buying a new amp, get the smallest class-D monoblock you can find instead, 100w RMS should be plenty for powering a 6w0 really, my amp is serious overkill).

Don't bother looking for another sub, the JLAudio 6W0 looks like the only real candidate for 5 litre sub. Maybe you could get away with the slightly larger Carpower Raptor-6, but i figure the 6w0 will be a better choice for a 5 litre box. Otherwise, it seems hard to find and subs that REALLY work well in 5 litres.

I am planning to build a closed sub-box that closely follows the dimensions of the BOSE-sub but has the speaker firing towards the passengers legs instead. The amp will be installed to the left of the bose amp in the trunk and i will use the existing cables to connect the new sub. I also plan to make it easy to take the amp and new sub out and restore everything to original.

I am in the same boat with a non-bose 2006 997 C2. SInce these cars have the PCM 2 built in, it sounds like a similar install. Where are your installers tapping into the output to route it to the outboard amp? I am getting a few contrasting reports of how to do this (and if it is even available)?

Do the speakers use a MOST connection too or is it just a regular analog connection?

Thanks!
