Replacing steering wheel on a 987

Recommended Posts

I'm replacing my standard steering wheel with a sport steering wheel. I'd like to find out if this is something I can do on my own. Does anyone have the procedure for R&R'ing the steering wheel?

Also, I'm wondering if this is going to trigger a code or something in the computer--I know that tampering with SRS-type stuff generally makes computers freak out these days. Not sure how finicky Porsche is about the airbags.

Thanks for any help!

I'm also trying to figure that out since I want to replace my standard thin steering wheel with the Alcantra but can't seem to find any info. If I find anything I'll let you know, please do the same.

Thanks.

I have been looking at replacing my standard steering wheel in a 2006 Boxster S for a while now and can not find any good options:

  • The GT3 steering wheel is currently on eBay for $450 but I would have to swith my triangular airbag for the round one which costs about $600.
  • Techart makes a nice thick steering wheel that costs a ridiculous $2150 but I would get $600 back for the exchange.
  • The Porsche alcantara wheel for the triangular airbag costs almost $1000 and is no thicker than the standard wheel.

I don't want to spend $1000 or more. Still looking for a cheaper alternative. Any ideas?

I got my center console painted and removed and reinstalled it myself. I had to disconnect the passenger airbag warning light on the console and that triggered the light to come on permanently. I had to take it to the dealer to get the code reset. I have not switched my steering wheel yet but I would expect the same problem there.
