"Discontinued" modules?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was working on my garage door opener mod (using the shade screen switch), trying to find a good spot for the actual opener under the dash and behind the main console when I discovered a small box, about 2"x2"x1", grey, which has 2 black wires going into it on one end and one set of wires encapsulated in a black cover coming out of the other end. The wires that are coming out, however, are CUT and don't go anywhere! The little box was tucked behind the main console, about where the airbag sensor is located. One of the wires going into the box has a part number on it: 986.612.072.00. What is this box and what is it supposed to do? Does anyone know where the wires that are coming out of it are supposed to connect to? Can I connect them myself?

I also noticed 2 other wires that are just hanging there, one is red and the other one yellow, with a white cover on it. These might be coming from the radio, but I don't know for sure.

See attached pictures.

TIA!

That little box is an aftermarket FM modulator used to add a radio station that plays audio signal from an apparently previously removed cd changer or satellite radio. The cable with the Porsche part number is your OEM antenna. Between it and the box is a VW/Porsche to standard Motorola antenna adapter. The yellow and red wires are most likely tapped onto the back of the radio and were used to power whatever was removed. The white thing is at least part of a fuse holder. If you pull out your factory radio and plug the OEM antenna back in, you should be able to completely remove everything else in your pictures. And you might get better reception. And your car will be lighter and faster (removing previous owner's crap is always a good way to make your car happy.)

Ah, that explains it. I thought it may have something to do with the radio, but I wanted to double check. I'll poke around and see if I can remove it, or I'll take it all out when I install a new head unit

Thanks!
