PHONED THE INDY TODAY to chase up whats going on with my 996 C4 tip he advised filter came in today and he has drained oil (he said it was not very black at all ) and has fitted new filter found bits pf plastic on the pan near the magnets ???

he also said he spotted some electrical wires that had got hot and melted the outer surface ?? he has bridgedit with new wires and said he will put back together and test the car in couple of hours to see if it goes in fifth gear and does not go back in to reduced drivin program .

fingers crossed he might have found the fault and i do not need a new tip but how the wires melted i dont know??

intresting to hear other peeps opinion..

as only one fault was showing up on fault code which is given early on in form po7034 i think ??

I am so excited that he might have fixed it cant wait .... will update later

its all ending in tears lol

now the indy rang me said he test drove the car and exactly same probs as I drove in with he also adds that the box makes a noise now a whine ? also he mentioned that although the oil was not very black it was very low

and some sort of burning activity must have happened inside my box as the plastic bit at the bottom of the pan had melted and also some wires had melted which he claims he fixed but still no good

he tells me the tranny has to come out and stripped for further diagnoses which will cost ?? he suggest replacing tranny with second hand unit want around 2000 mark for doin this dunno what to do

does any one know any good auto tip specialist engineering firms round the west mids area in the UK or where a good second hand tip box can be sourced for the 996

any advice would be appreciated as I am now gutted I am wondering if he fixed them wires properley ? same fault code comes up

Same exact problems here. P0733 and P0744 (DTC 73, 74) showing on OBDII scan.

What I have done so far:

2 full fluid changes (first one w/ new filter)

Swapped entire valve body and solenoid pack from 12k mile old trans

Cleared codes, rechecked; same codes came up.

Still same problem as OP. 1st and 2nd engage properly, third just slips until redline - won't engage AT ALL!!!

Anything else I should try/check before biting the bullet and having the rest of the other (12k mile) tip trans installed?

This is really discouraging as my car only has 52k on the odo. I don't drive it that hard, do I?

EDIT: just tried running it with the MAF disconnected - no change

i havent tried maf yet gonna try that see what happens it might still be your maf unplugging it should make the car run slower like the mf is broken hence if it still behaved the same with the maf unplugged try changing that first . the gear box place who are gonna recon my box demand that i pay for a new maf as well otherwise they will not warranty the box

  • 1 year later...

Same exact problem. Same exact car. I've already had the transmission rebuilt once by a crap mechanic. The problem has not been resolved, and I'm looking at having it replaced again. Bad year? Bad car?

  • 5 years later...

Just had the same problem with 1999 c4 tip at 103k miles. At 85mph heard a Bam! dropped into 4th and seemed to start losing drive. D light and 4th gear light began alternate flashing. It seemed like I lost 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th but was able to drive to Uhaul location close by (was 300mi from home) and drove it onto an auto carrier. At my mechanic I found I had also lost R and N as could not reverse off trailer and N would not allow to roll off. Had to disconnect rear left wheel from axle and then it rolled.

Still waiting for diag but expect the worst from reading above.

I wish there was more info on what happened to the cases above but since years ago, I guess I will soon find out.

If any additional info Please Help...
