Dash Rattles

Recommended Posts

I recently aquired a '97 Boxster with a std. black interior. There is excessive rattling coming from around the instrument cluster. It's especially noticable when going over a rough road. I've tried to isolate the noise, but I can't seem to track it down. I've wedged foam rubber around in spots, business cards, etc. and still no luck. I've noticed this on several other Boxster's with a black interior. Maybe just a coincidence. Does the cluster have to come out? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

As you look at the cluster, there is a screw on the right behind the microphone, and another behind the emergency flasher switch. It's easy to remove these two screws, then lift the entire cluster/surround straight up. You'll se that there are several "pegs" that fit into holes with sleeves in them. Not sure if the sleves are replacable, but i'd try a layer of heat shink or tape around the pegs, then re-install and try it. You should also see any wear marks where the noise is coming from.

Thanks, I'll try that. I may have stumbled upon the problem. I removed the left dash speaker assembly and noticed the screw that goes through the speaker bottom into the clip was just hanging on by a couple of threads. I've tightened it up, and hopefully it eliminates the noise.

Thanks again.]
