Not sure if there is a concensus on this but whats the general option on the best model year engine to purchase for a replacement engine? All things equal, whats the best performer?

1999 3.4

just get the latest porsche factory reman engine you can get from the dealership (e.g. sunset porsche in Oregon). not sure if it's worth the expense and hassle of fitting the 3.6 into your 99 with the cable throttle. this way you know everything is clean from factory and you get a two year warranty on top of it.

when you go outside the factory, things get pretty hairy and complex (not worth the headache imo)

I guess you know that I just had to chime in on this topic. ;)

Options...Porsche reman engines...

If you go the 3.4 route you will pay $11,000 from Porsche for the engine plus core of arounfd $2400. Then you will look at an install for another $2000+.

If you want to go the 3.6 route you can but a new 3.6 reman for $8500 plus a core charge of $2700. Suncoast Porsche in Florida (Sunset wont) will allow you to return your 3.4 for $2,200. So the new 3.6 will cost you around $9000. You have the 2 year warranty as well.

The 3.6 conversion and install will cost you around $4500 to $5000. So you get the 3.6 for an extra grand.

I will post my feedback on my conversion when I finally get the car back which should be next week. I have driven it once and there are still some bugs to work out. I was very impressed so far on the performance.

There are a lot of options and none of them are "clear cut" easy decisions. I went with what I thought was the best decision for my situation.

More later :renntech:
