Sudden loss of power and the CEL comes on

Recommended Posts

My pride and joy (1997 Boxster 2.5) played up on me on my way to work yesterday morning. I was driving on the motorway when there was a sudden loss of power. I was able to nurse it to the nearest off-ramp. I was able to crawl at a snails pace with the engine RPM just above idle. Any attempt to accelerate ended up with the engine cutting out. On the way to a nearby garage close to the off-ramp, the CEL started flashing for a short wile and eventually ended up as a full amber. At this point normal engine power was restored and I steadily returned home.

I downloaded the fault codes last night and now need some advice on what the problem may could be. For what I was able to establish searching the forum points towards a faulty MAF. Even though several O2 fault codes appear in the list, am I correct to assume that they only reports the emission issues and that the actual item causing the problem is “upstream”. This leads me to believe that it may be the MAF to blame.

P.S. A problem I’ve also been struggling from time to time is when accelerating the engine briefly “hesitates” going through the 4500 RPM range. This I also considered to be the MAF giving notice.

The fault codes downloaded are listed below.

Eagerly awaiting your responds.

Cheers
