Brakes almost to the floor?

Recommended Posts

My brake fluid light came on the other night then the ABS light, now no brakes and lost allot of fluid if not all in resevoir. I refilled res and brakes still go almost to the floor but do pump up, but need to be pumped up again to brake. I did not spot any leakages under car around wheels or under cover where the I beleive traction control unit is? The brakes where bleed 2K ago and needed pumping up some then to. My question is where are some common places for leaks besides the calipers and clutch solenoid? I will pull tires off tomorrow for inspection but would like some other places to look to.

Master brake cylinder (rear side/leaking inside the brake booster) - ABS unit (leaking under the trim/carpet in front trunk) - master clutch cylinder (leaking under the carpet pedal area) - clutch slave cylinder (leaking inside the bell housing) - the other possible leaking spots are visible by brake fluid traces on the garage floor.

Found leak it is inside cabin "note Pics" by the pushrod that goes into the firewall. I had the brake master cylinder replaced not to long ago but not sure that's where it is coming from? The parts show just one seal between the master and the booster so is this another bad master cylinder or can I purchase a internal master seal? Also need to know what to use to clean the floor mat and carpet underneath "what a mess".

The cylinder in your pic. is the master CLUTCH cylinder, the master BRAKE cylinder is not visible from the inner side of the foot well. You can clean the mess up with water, brake fluid is soluble with water.

Thanks good catch how is it removed hard to tell by diagram. It looks like there are no hydraulic lines to disconnect and not sure where the "C-Clip: is located to remove the unit is it inside cabin or other?

Disconnect the cylinder push rod from the pedal, disconnect the cylinder from the pedal box, remove the upper flexible (plastic) hydraulic line from the cylinder, push the cylinder backwards and remove the rear flexible hydraulic line (in the front trunk besides the brake booster). You can use the old "C" clips in case of emergency.

Seems striaght forward enough thanks. I assume that removing the brake fluid from resevoir is nessecary and rebleeding both brake and clutch again when done? One last question is the master clutch cyl adjustable by screwing in the pushrod?

That is the only one I spotted so far. I have ordered the part and will install and check furthor, the clutch is #1 first because it leaks on my carpet.
