Hi,

I am getting a very loud front end noise (passenger side) whenever i accelerate over 25 mph. It sounds like a loud Bad CV joint ( Dug...Dug..Dug) or sounds like running on a deflated tire. Is it a bad cardan shaft ?

Thanks

What year and what milage? Some faults are more common then other but as RFM stated you really need to put the vehicle up on a lift and inspect those components.

Does it have air suspension?

2004 cayenne S, 95K miles. No Air suspension.

My 04 S w/82K spring suspension has developed a similar sound under somewhat similar circumstances.

Above 45Mph I hear a "metallic" waugh waugh waugh sound too. Cannot discern what side or corner it is coming from but assume a bearing is failing.

Slight changes in acceleration or deceleration do seem to alter the pitch and actual frequency of the sound too. Worries me that this acceleration and deceleration making this difference could point to a differential failing.

Thoughts?

Above 45 mph? Amazing how consistent these things are (at least when they fail). Unfortunately there really is no good way to check the driveshaft (the odds are in your favor that you are having a center bearing failure). I had the exact same symptoms on an 04 CS last year and a driveshaft replacement did the trick. Interestingly, two dealers told me the old shaft looked fine (b/c you can't really check it - some develop play as they get really bad).

Hope you have extended warranty - likely $1,000 or more (and you'll still be guessing that is what it is).

By the way, the quote above is a perfect/dead-on description of a bad cardan shaft. Part retails for $720 plus 2 hours labor. Thank VW for the quality part.

All,

For the record. I'm not surprised at this since I've been down-shifting a LOT lately since I replaced the muffler in my CTT with straight pipes....SOUNDS AWESOME THOUGH!. (and it take a lot for me to say.....I'm 39 years old) LOL.

I seriously have had dozens of compliments on the sound in the past month. Oh well, I guess that's the price tag of driving a 500+HP Superwagon.

Again, thanks guys and have a great weekend. I'm going to order my shaft from Sunset now.

Matt
