Replacing the Evaporator

Recommended Posts

I have to replace the evaporator in the AC unit hidden behind the dash.

Has anyone done this job, and if so is there a write up anywhere for removing the dash.

I did search "dash removal" and several variations with out success.

Thanks in advance.

If you do a search, you will find some talk about removing the dahsboard that might scare you off. I've done it in my '04 986S - it is involved, took time, but isn't all that hard. Patience and instructions are key.

The Bentley manual was pretty good for this chore. I'd recommend it for this. There are so many steps, so many little screws, it is hard to chronicle it all. Working from a less than perfect memory, it involves:

* remove driver airbag, steering wheel, stalk surround

* remove sun visors to remove A pillar covers

* remove the instrument cluster

* remove glove box

* remove passenger air bag

* remove dash speakers

* remove left and right air ducting connections

* disconnect OBD port from dash

* remove trim from center around AC and radio head

* remove switches, radio and AC heads

* remove lower console trims, inserts and frame

* remove ducting connected to dash

* find and remove about 12 - 14 screws that hold the dash in place

Like I say, a lot of steps - it takes a while, but none of it is all that hard. Bentleys is pretty good on this one - it is the way to go unless someone else can chime in with the detail.
