Help - Car Will Not Start Suddently - One Loud Click

Hi There,

I need some help. My 2004 994 TT Cab refuse to start for absolutely no reasons. I thought it was the battery so I bought a brand new one and had it fully charged/installed. When I turn the key to start, I hear a single "CLICK", coming from under the car, but not CLICK CLICK CLICK (like it does when low batt).... That Single click I hear is definitevely coming from the starter. Then, a message in the dash says "Error, check BAttery/Alternator"...

LAst week, we removed the engine to change the clutch, but I was able to start the car about 3 times since then (100miles)... (btw, I did press the clutch and the clutch switch is working properly)

Anyone know what can be my problem ?

Sounds like the solenoid is is not engaging the starter. Most starters have a washer inside that makes electrical contact to the starter motor when you turn the key. This makes the starter plunger extend engaging the starter gear and making electrical contact through a washer that makes contact against two electrical contacts inside the starter. This washer in time gets corroded and will not make contact. What you may be hearing is the solenoid extracting but thats all because there's no contact for the starter to run. On some starters there is an external contact where you can bypass the solenoid and just make the starter motor run.

chek the ground wire it my not be tight

Does sound like a ground especially since he just had the engine out.

The main ground wire (thick) goes from the engine to the car body, put a long jumper cable directly from the engine to the battery negative (ground). If the starter engage as it should now, you have a ground problem, if the problem persist, check the starter main power connection or complete starter.
