99 2.5 boxster

Recommended Posts

i am new to this forum but just picked up a mint condition 99 boxster with blown motor. 5 speed tranny. Need new motor so #1 Need to make a simple upgrade to better motor. No problem shimming motor and tranny. #2 Need dependable motor so would like to replace problem parts such as Intermediate shaft bearing. Chain guides or and timing chains. Cylinders sleeves. and any other suggestions. How about a motor and 6 speed tranny combo. My goal is to have a dependable boxster if their is such a thing. I thought even the carrera water cooled motors have problems? I thought about the 3.2s motor with the 6 speed but it seems they are opting for the x51 motor. Remember I don't have fly by wire peddle. Thanks

Concrat's and welcome. Sounds like you've done your home work and are on top of things. My 2 cents would be;

Drive by cable is the least of your challenges, I don't think it will be when your done.

A six speed is not a big deal, I think the later "S's" had them stock out of the box anyway. I think there is also an outfit that can fit a six speed to any of these sixes.

Gotta' run, keep us posted-PK

The easiest swap would be another 2.5 with the updated IMS from Flat 6 and new chain tensioners, etc. Past that, the easiest swap is a 3.4L from a 996. Putting a Boxster S motor in is difficult - reprogramming the computer, new pedals, etc. Boxster S transmissions are not easy either, since you need new halfshafts and new hubs for the rear wheels.

Sent you a PM.

I want to know about swapping in a 3.4 cayman s motor to 99 boxter 2.5. I already have fly by wire(PSM).this option or a 3.2 are the only ones I'll consider because that's what is legal for scca autocross. Is the wire harness the same for all three setups? how about intakes? is the 987 3.4 the same bellhousing pattern as the 3.2/2.5/2.7? I know the 996 3.4 is not. are the variocam actuators, sensors, etcetera the same type, and function?

Thanks for the help. Probably will go with a low mileage 2.5 and replace ims bearing, rear main seal and is it easy to replace chain guides while out of the car. Wouldn't it be nice to drive a dependable porsche. Remember when it was the indurance racer of the past. Also what is the $100 ims bearing a good replacement.
