996 automatic help on millage

Recommended Posts

I am looking to buy a 1999-2002 996. I have found a couple 99-00 for $20K with 50-60K miles. I also found an 02 for $19K with 89K miles. I guess I am wondering what is a better deal. Lower miles older car more miles newer car. I am concerned about IMS so I was wondering if there is a mileage that IMS failure happens at most?

Posts about IMS failure causes and rates are highly speculative and I wouldn't put to much weight on any of the theories. For peace of mind, you should either get an extended warranty that covers engine replacement, or have the IMS upgraded to the LNEngineering version. My two cents.

Lower miles is usually better. Just because of wear and tear on the general condition of the car. With the 996 the most important thing is that is has been serviced properly and driven regularly. Gargage queen syndrome not a good thing for the 996 engine.

If I was to buy another 996 I would get the IMS upgrade. Good insurance.

Good luck with whatever you decide.. Take your time there are A LOT of 996's out there..
