New 996 Owner - Questions

Recommended Posts

Just traded in my Boxster for a 2002 996 Tiptronic. Love the car and enjoying it but have a few questions.

In Auto - the car starts from a standing stop in 2nd Gear. Is this normal, or should it default to 1st? (I can change this manually using the steering wheel tiptronic controls, but want to know if this is the norm).

It seems to move up the gearbox really quickly and be in 5th before I'm doing 40kph (so you have to drop it a few gears to accelerate). Is the gearbox a "learning gearbox" that adapts to the driving style, and is there any way to clear this "memory" if so?

Car under a limited warranty, so trying to get all this sorted if necessary

Any help on this much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Yes and yes.

Starts in 2nd to save gas. Moves as quickly as you accelerate again for mpg's sake.

Yes the trans learns your driving style mainly senses when you are taking curves and holds lower gear. You'll get a feel for it.

Dave,

As ogun228 says, it is normal to start out in 2nd gear. The Tiptronic only starts out in 1st gear when you have the throttle wide open.

Reading through the Owner's Manual you'll re-discover (from your Boxster days) the "German Engineering" behind the various systems/sub-systems. If you don't have an Owner's Manual, you can down load one here, or if you want paper copy you can purchase one from your Porsche dealer for about $30.00.
