Pricing question

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of looking for a used Boxster. I’ve been doing research, lurking on the forums etc. Like any car purchase, it is a balance between age, price and condition. I would like to get some opinions on prices. It seems to me that the vast majority are priced so far over KBB value (even worse for Edmunds!) that I’m having trouble deciding how far under to offer? Example:

Edmunds says a clean 2003 with about 40k should sell for $13,900 private party. An Autotrader search for an 03 with less than 45k comes back with an average price of $22,500! Are people really paying that much less than asking price?

Just a little confused and would love some opinions.

Good question. When I bought my 1999 I was checking comparable models with like mileage and they were all over the place. Checked them on Ebay. Not that I would buy a car from there. But just interested in what they were going for. Checked Auto Trader and so on. I could find no rhyme nor reason for the pricing. Obviously ones with all the service records are going to demand more money. That's why people keep them. But other than that??? Dunno. I would like to see peoples opinion on this as well.

That does look like a sweet deal. What I have found is the little crap. Interior parts, etc. Are for the most part, inexpensive. EBay, junk yards and even dealers. When looking for parts, shop, shop, shop. The prices can vary by a great deal of dollars. What's funny is. I have seen used parts on Ebay sell for as much as new parts at dealers and junk yards the same. Just research and you'll be fine...

Good luck!!!

For researching prices on p-cars, I always start with Excellence Magazine. Look for the latest issue with updates on Boxsters. These numbers are supposed to be reflective of prices paid across the country. At least they are a good starting point for reference purposes.

Good Luck
