Oil Level gage

When it's cold outside, just above freezing is it normal for the oil level gage to read in the red or do I have a problem? 1977 911S Targa but has a 1983 3.2L engine.

Oil level gauge is very dynamic so it's always recommended to check the oil level via the dipstick when the oil is up to temp, vehicle level and engine at idle. The level should be between the min and max levels. Never fill the level to max.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have a fair mechanical understanding of engines as I have tinkered with cars and engines for quite a while. But this whole air cooled engine thing and complex oil system is something new to me. I just didn't want to do damage to the engine by running it low on oil. The actual oil pressure is not too bad but it really fluctuates with the RPM but I'm told that's normal. Where is the sender unit for the oil level, is it in the tank or sump?
