2000 996 Coupe: noise on cold engine start-up

Recommended Posts

There is a mechanical noise coming from the engine on cold start-ups. The noise goes away almost immediately. I read that it could be from the chain tensioners. If that is the case, what is causing the noise and how the noise could be eliminated?

Thanks

There are a lot of noises from these engines that are considered normal. That being said, if it wasn't there before but it is now then there could be a problem.

What weight and type of oil are you running? And is it filled properly?

Can you describe the noise some more. Cold/warm start.

Ticking, knocking, chain like, etc.

Approximately where in the engine it is coming from (needs a helper and optionally a lift/jack stands)?

Thanks for your reply.

The oil is Mobil 1 0W40 and I keep the level close to the maximum. When I changed the oil (just a few weeks ago), I inspected the filter and I could not see any metal particles in it.

I did not have this noise before. It has been gradually increasing recently. It is not a ticking or knocking noise. I would say that is more like chain noise. I will be more specific tomorow. Now the engine is warm and does not make that noise, when it starts.

I plan on doing that, but I prefer to wait until I don't use the car for the a couple of days. That is when the difference in start-up noise is more evident

Another thing that can sometimes be useful to diagnose a problem remotely is to record a brief clip of the audio and/or video using a smartphone / camera / etc. and upload to this website or youtube.

Could be variocam actuator.

Lifters.

Chains.

Chain tensioner.

Those are some of the internal engine items.

Could be a lose/bad spark plug.

Could be a lose/bad seal on an exhaust header.

My 1999 996 used to the same thing. I have 60,000 miles. I tried different weights of Mobil 1 and Castrol with no change. I even took it to the dealer for an opinion and they said - normal. So at my last oil change I tried Motul 8100, 5W-40 and the noise stopped. I know it sounds ridiculous but after a couple of thousand miles, still no noise.
