Hi everyone:

Spent the weekend changing my oil and spark plugs. The posts here were really helpful. For anyone thinking of changing their plugs WITHOUT removing the mufflers, don't even think about it. The mufflers were a breeze to remove. I've actually wanted to replace the clamps for a while (due to age) and so did that as well.

Anyway, I've had this recurrent oil leak from the rear of the car, passenger side. I've attached a photo of where I believe the leak is coming from. It appears to be from the gasket around this sensor (where the black wire terminates). The photo was taken from the passenger wheel well, towards the rear of the car, after having removed the muffler.

Can anyone help identify it, tell me what it does, and tell me how to remove it? Much appreciated. The car is a 2000 Carrera 4.

Control solenoid for the variocam. You can replace the seal by just removing the two bolts that retain the cover.

Anyone have the part number for the seal? Should I replace it while I'm in there? What does it do exactly?

Sure, you can replace it if it is leaking and is easy to do.

The seal (cover) keeps the oil inside the head from leaking out past the variable cam timing solenoid (the thing with the wire sticking out of it in your pic).

The solenoid has one simple connector to disconnect, then the new cover bolts right on.

7.5ft/lb IIRC.
