Quesiton regarding aerokit 1 SideSkirt install

Recommended Posts

Hello,

New Porsche owner here, just got a 1999 996 a couple of weeks ago. Been reading a lot of posts here, great site. I was wondering if the Gen 1 aero sideskirts can be installed with just double sided tape rather than epoxy. I prefer to do this unless for some reason this type of install is not recommended. I purchased a new factory set on ebay that did not include hardware (screws and clips.) Do I still need to purchase these if I use double sided tape. Thanks in advance.

Hello John,

I am no expert in the install of this kit however I did just go through the exact ordeal you are going through.

There are many ways to install the kit but this is what I recommend for ease of install. The factory install guide shows having to buy a mounting rail and having to drill it into the rocker panel using self tapping screws. I completely bypassed this operation because I wanted a safety net. I wanted to be able to remove the skirts at any point without having holes in my rocker panel.

This is what I did,

In any case you have to buy the screws, the spacers and the clips. This will ensure a tight fit at the bottom of the skirt. At the top of the skirt where it meets the gravel guard on the rocker just use 3m double sided tape. Make sure it is 3m because it has a fairly tight hold. The key to this install is mounting the clips in the right position and pre-fitting the skirts before you have them painted to ensure it is a nice fittment. I failed to do the latter and had to have mine repainted.

Part Numbers for the parts are as follows:

18 x 999-507-640-09 Clamps

22 x 999-073-060-02 Retaining Screws

16 x 944-503-255-00 Spacers

This is all I needed to install the skirts. They fit excellent and they are not going anywhere.

Hope this helps.

Raymond

Greetings Raymond,

Thank you for taking the time to help out. I really appreciate it. Can you tell me where you bought the 3m tape? Also, did you think the install was difficult? Something to be left to the body shop or is this something that can be accomplished by DIY.

The 3M Tape can be bought at any Body Shop Supply store or any serious auto parts store.

The install is quite easy. If I remember correctly you purchased the OEM skirts and not fiberglass replica's. These are quite easier to install. The fiberglass ones require fitting and re-fitting. Let the body shop handle those.

In your case, if you know how to handle a Philips screwdriver and can spend a few hours on your car, you will find it quite enjoyable to do it yourself. This is not really difficult at all.

Good Luck,

Post if you need more help.

Raymond
