Stripped Throttle Body Gear

Recommended Posts

2008 Gas V6 M/T, about 130K miles.  I bought it a little over a year ago.

I was driving on the highway for about an hour with no issues, as soon as I cut the cruise control off I got a bunch of warning lights and was in limp mode with no power, rough idle, etc.

Various codes related to the DBW system.  I poked around for a bit and found this stripped gear in the throttle body.  I bought a used throttle body with fewer miles and swapped that gear in to mine - I don't have any way to calibrate the the computer to the TB, so my thinking was that by only swapping that gear the calibration shouldn't change.  After disconnecting the battery for a while and restarting everything seems to be working great again.

I am wondering if anyone has seen this before and what might be the cause?  Is this a calibration issue, did the previous owner force the throttle plate open to clean it, is that gear a normal wear item, do these things ice up in certain conditions?  I am not sure.  My replacement had about half the mileage on it and showed no wear.  I did clean the TB while I had it out but it really wasn't that bad, certainly not sticking closed.

The stripped portion of the gear is around the idle position.

In case it helps someone with this problem in the future, the initial codes I got when it failed were:

P2103

P0638

P2100

P2101

Eventually a few others popped up:

P2123

P2126
