are installing headers a DIY job?

Recommended Posts

just curious. can they done at home without a lift?

i am going to try those suncoast headers out. i like to DIY when possible.

anybody got a link to some directions?

thanks.

errr, ummmm, welll....

i did em myself but i was lucky. it appeared that the previous owner had the headers removed for some reason allowing the header bolts to be easily removed. they probably used some anti seize. if your car is straight from the factory there is a good possibility they didn't use any anti seize. if you break these bolts you are SOL. one of the bolts on my car apparent had bee broken because there was an insert in one of the bolt holes.

SPR had a terrible time swapping the headers and ended up busting quite a few of the bolts. he ended up flat bedding the car to the dealer.

oh ya, i did break one of the bolts that attach the cat pipes to the header. :(

soak the bolts over night with PB blaster or WD 40 to ease bolt removal. if bolt feel stock, turn the bolt in tighten direction and then back and force a few times to loosen up. then soak w more lube. it's DIY but you should work on it with some care and not just brute force alone.

stock headers from the factory, so i'm sure they're probably on there tight. maybe i'll go ahead and pay my tuner the $100 and let him screw with it. i can just see me sitting in my garage staring at the broken stud, cursing up a storm. wish i could talk the wife into why i need a lift :)

i think i'll take your advice and spray those bolts for him though. couldn't hurt to get some pentrating oil on there.

i obviously know what WD40 is, but what's PB blaster? is it better than WD40?

PB blaster is a lube similar to wd40. You can get it in a spray can in auto supply or home supply stores. You probly don't want to soak it and then drive the car since the lube will be burnt off unless the shop is within a mile from your house. If you aren't comfortable in doing it, leave the job to the exhaust guy. He'll spray it I'm sure. Make sure you take it to a reputable shop though

100 bucks!?! that's a no brainer. leave it to the experts. if they end up breaking any studs then they have the proper tools to fix it.
