Engine Knocks - pls Help

Recommended Posts

Hi everone, hope you are all well.

Just after some help / advice.

I know this is gard to diagnose with out seeing / hearing the car, but wondered if there are any ideas that is might be or any tests I can do.

Basically I am getting a knocking sound from the engine, it only seems to be at idle, and is more evident if you get on the floor and listen from under the car. Its kind of like the knocking noise you get when you start stalling the engine?

Do you have any suggestions?

Many thanks

Russ

When you say engine rod bearing, do you mean the crack shaft bearing, or the con rod bearing??

Either way, are these not just shall's that can be replaced??

part 12 is rod bearing and it will crack. easiest way to find out is bring your car to any local auto repair shop and have them drain your engine oil. Look inside of your oil filter if you see any metal debris.. If you have any metal particles, you know.. your engine is going bye bye.

You can have porsche authorized repair shop work on this, but cost of repair is almost same as getting new engine. Porsche lowered price of boxster engine after so many problems with these engines. So they knock out $10,000 off and bring it down to $7000.

so its just the con rod shells wearing out, thats a common fault of most engines, I believe most con-rod shells are made from white metal, which is designed to wear.

Question, maybe laurn or toolpants can help with this one.

Is it a difficult DIY task to drop the engine and replace these yourself??

I can imagine (depending on the engine design) that all you need to do is split the oil sump from the bottom to access the crack shaft, then unbolt each con-rod at the big end (crank shaft end) and fit new shells.

I have done this on other engines before quite easily.

I might even have access to a ramp if that helps?

Any comments guys??

Cheers
